Amount of protein intake needed to build muscle?

I’ve done some research that suggests that 1-1.2g of protein is needed per pound of body weight in order to maintain muscle while ‘cutting.’ Other sources suggest 0.5-0.8g per pound of body weight for straight muscle growth (no mention of cutting). So which is it?

For someone like me who is trying to build muscle still, but eat in a caloric deficit so as to lower my body fat percentage (aka not explicitly ‘cutting’ rather ‘dieting’), how much protein per day do I really need?

My normal diet does not include a lot of protein, so much of the protein I do get is from supplements/going out of my way to eat meat, etc.
