Adding muscle and dropping fat

I've recently started training again for the first time in 4 years. I want to add muscle while loosing fat (love handles). I make sure I consume 1gr of protein per lb of body weight and I try and keep calories and carbs as low as possible. Is this the best way to accomplish my goal?
