I am from South Asia, and my family has always eaten a plate of rice along with 2 or 3 curries and usually some fish, meat or egg. Sometimes we eat stuff like pizza, pasta, noodles, cereal etc. I have a friend who is also from South Asia and he also eats a similar diet to me. Recently, he told me that he is has stopped eating rice completely, and has begun to eat a Western diet of vegetables and meat. Peas, cabbage, carrots, steak, etc. He claims that this diet makes him grow taller and stronger since apparently, you need calcium and protein to grow taller. He claims that he has grown a few millimetres since he made this change to his diet. We are both teenagers and I know that him saying that he has grown since he started the diet could just be false attribution since we are both at the age where we grow in height anyway. But his story made me curious, is there any way that a western diet is actually better for you? Are his claims on how a western diet is better valid?
