Calories needed to maintain the same weight

Let's assume a person requires 2000 calories a day.
They eat 2500 instead daily to make muscle gains.
Do they still need to eat 2500 daily to keep those gains or can they go back to slightly over 2000 calories and not lose muscle? (Slightly over since online it says a pound of muscle consumes about 10 calories daily)
