Increasing intake to boost fat loss: myth or reality?

Hello,

I often come across a strange piece of advice given to people on very low calorie diets who reach a plateau in their weight loss: they get told to increase their intake instead of further reducing it. According to the proponents of this method, the calorie increase supposedly boosts basal metabolism, which means that by eating more these people can lose more weight. This seems to run counter to everything science has established so far in terms of physiology and metabolism, yet there are so many testimonies validating this technique that I cannot simply brush it off as an unscientific myth or urban legend.

So if anybody has a scientific explanation based on scientific data (studies if possible) that would be great.
PS. I'm a nutritionist so don't hesitate to throw the raw data at me.
Thanks!
