Needing Carbs Pre-Workout

I used to train fasted a few years ago when I did IF, & my lifts progressed ok. Ever since eating carbs pre-workout or at least eating a large amount of carbs the night prior, my performance shot up. Nowadays, there's a noticeable drop in my explosive output if I fail to do so. This is particularly true of lifting & especially HIIT. I don't notice this at all in a LISS workout, but even when I run intervals at a "fast" pace around 5-minute miles , my performance really drops without carbs. Why would this be? I've read that "carbo-loading" was pointless if you're running for under than an hour or lifting, but I certainly would be able to run a faster 5k or lift heavier with more carbs. What gives? Is it simply a matter of experience? Does your average noob lifter/runner maybe not need to worry about chit like this but more advanced trainees do?
