Calories for a small woman

I am hoping to get some advice from the people on this forum.

My wife and I have started trying to lose body fat. I have been doing it successfully for a while figuring out my BMR etc... and now being on around 1700 calories a day and i am doing well.

My wife has now started to get involved but she is already quite small. She has a small frame and sits around 8 stone usually but is a bit "skinny fat" so she want to get more lean. I used the same calculations and calorie deficit that i am using (500 cal) but this puts her daily calorie allowance at about 1200 which to me seems really low. She has a lot less to lose than i do and i dont want to start going down the route if it is essentially starving her.

She does workout hiit videos, just got heavier dumbbells (4kgs) and we are going to get back into running starting the couch to 5k plan.

Any advice, is this too low? Should she be focusing on other exercises?

I do all of the cooking and the prep etc.. so its really down to me to help her, i just want it to be sustainable so she doesnt give in quickly.
