Confused about calories

Hello hello,

I’ll start with the main point!

I’m 5”7, 154lbs. My maintenance calories apparently should be around 2250.

Been trying to up my calorie intake to build muscle, but when I started counting my calories and macros, turns out I’m averaging 1800 a day. I’m under maintenance in general! And struggling to eat more. I’ve managed to increase it slightly. AND somehow... I’ve started to get a muffin top! But I’m eating UNDER maintenance?? Am I misunderstanding something?

More details here if you’re interested. The story:

I’ve been going to the gym for a while now. Using progressive overload, and I’ve been getting stronger. I’m in pretty good form to be fair. Although I haven’t put on much weight...

I hadn’t focussed on my diet properly, so recently I started taking that seriously. Cutting out all bad foods as much as I can. Still eating my normal amount of food, but just trying to keep it healthy.

This went well, and I started looking trim. So I wanted to start eating more, counting calories and macros so I could attempt to get bigger (without too much fat gain!)

When I started making a note of everything I was eating, it turns out I average around only 1800 calories a day (equal protein and carbs, less fat, say 40,40,20 ish). And I’m FULL!

I try to eat more but struggle to get to even my maintenance 2250 a day.

However, I’ve started to put on a layer of fat? How would this happen if I’m eating under calories? I must be doing something odd... but there’s so much information about that I don’t know what to listen to.

Any thoughts?
Experienced the same thing?
Help me out!
Thanks
