I’m in the middle of a 3 month backpacking trip across europe, and as many would guess, it is not always the most diet friendly. For the most part I’m going solo, so I am able to get whole wheat breads, lean means, fruits, etc, and stay fairly healthy. But of course, it’s europe, I’m on vacation, and when in Italy...you eat gelato and pasta. My point is, I am still being somewhat nutritionally conscious, opting for making my own meals frequently, but I’m having way to good a time to be overly strict and not let myself have some of the new things around me when I’m abroad, it’s part of the experience after all.
The other issue is excercise. Before I left I was lifting 4-5 times a week, making progress, I had even started doing two workouts a day to prepare for this trip. With being on the road, I’m only able to get in a resistance band workout every few days, mostly because I’m so dead from walking all over the place, hiking, climbing who knows how many churches and cathedrals...but dedicated exercise has taken a sizeabke dropoff.
I have no intentions of changing what I’m doing, I’m enjoying myself way to much, And i haven’t noticed any weight gain, maybe some body comp change(muscles feel smaller, softer) but that’s pretty much it. I’m just curious now what I should expect when I return home and get back to lifting as far as strength and body comp? I was in the process of working to reduce body fat, I still have some so I’ll be working to get it off when I go home, and it’s possible ill have a little more then too, but not much. I’ve heard about ‘muscle memory’ and wanted to know if there was any truth to that, and also if possibly such a long break from actual dieting would possible mean that going into a cut would be more effective, from metabolic adaptation?
If anyone has experience or knowledge, I’d love to hear it! Again, no intentions of changing my plans for now, this is too fun. But I’m just curious because I want to know what to expect, and I find nutrition and fitness interesting, and this seems like a unique scenario.
Thanks all!
