Can a month of lowered calories make you catabolize?

Hi. In the past two months I ate around 2400 calories and lifted heavy, and I saw some great results. Now my trainer is making me eat less week after week for a total of a month before going back up again.

1st week P160, C250, F70, cal. 2270
2nd week P160, C200, F75, cal. 2115
3rd week P160, C150, F80, cal. 1960
4th week P160, C100, F85, cal. 1805

And then I'll jump back up and start lifting heavy again. He says I need to do this to avoid getting too fat, but I'm slightly worried I might lose all the gains I made in these past two months. So my question is, what exactly causes catabolism? When does the muscle start to actually catabolize? It might be a stupid question and I might just be paranoid, but I'd like an answer because everything I'm finding is pretty generic. Thank you.
