Let me just explain my struggle that I have been dealing with for the past 6 years. (Feel free to skip the long paragraph to get to my questions, it's just my back story and the context as to what is sparking my confusion.)
I am 17 years old, I am 6'1, and I weigh 135 lbs. Yes, take that in, picture my body, I am super skinny and have long, yet tooth pick arms.
I can eat fast 3 times a week for 5 months and I'd be lucky if I gained 2 lbs. I have dabbled in working out, but I have from what I can tell peaked in muscle building for now. I can only curl a max of 30 lbs, and I can't improve from there no matter how much I work out. I have super skinny and veiny arms when not flexed, and a decent, defined bicep when flexing. Same goes for my pecs, triceps, etc... basically I look like a straw when not flexing but I have okay definition when flexing. I have a defined 4 pack and small pooch where my sixth pack should be, I'm guessing that's because of all of the fast food I eat. Which is where my problem begins. People tell me I should eat more, which is the sole purpose that I don't hold back on nutrition when I choose what I eat. I will eat anything: burgers, corn dogs, chips, desserts... yet I don't gain any mass to work with. All of my "mass" just goes to that pooch where my sixth pack should be. Even then it doesn't get that big, I gained 2 lbs over months of unhealthy eating (referenced earlier.) So, obviously, just "eating more" isn't working, and I'm not gaining anything but less ab definition. For a while, I thought I was just doomed to be a tooth pick forever, and there's nothing I can do about it. A few days ago, however, I thought about another kid that goes to my highschool and is in wrestling. Up until highschool, he was nothing special: average thin body, no definition, not really a naturally bulky guy, but over his years in wrestling, he was forced to go on weight training which altered what he was supposed to eat in order to gain more mass or lose some (depending on what his goals for his weight class were.) I would sit next to him in some of my classes and he would say "I can't eat ____ for the next few days." At the time I didn't think this was anything special, and he wasn't either. But now, the dude is super ripped and couldn't have a more defined body. This is just hitting my head that he was on a planned diet all those years to predict and train his body's growth and development (aka bulking.) So long story short, I now know that you can't just eat everything in sight and expect to gain mass, you are supposed to bulk on carefully selected meals and meal plans.
So my questions:
1) When you are bulking for hard mass, I heard that high proteins and high calories is really important. I don't know where to start on planning my diet and if you even need to plan it. Do you usually go by a very strict, non flexible diet schedule (eating one specific thing every monday, another on tuesday, another for all other days, repeat without end?) Or do you just make it up as you go and eat whatever has high proteins and high calories? If it's a planned out schedule, can you please help me with making one that I can stick to for months without end?
2) With my stats (6'1 135 lbs,) do you think it's possible for me to gain a lot of mass from bulking? Or am I just naturally doomed for having a super skinny body type? I took a one day, one-on-one session with a physical trainer at my local gym, and he said I am all body fat (or weight since I have no fat) and extremely low muscle mass. I am super confused if I can gain muscle mass because a lot of people tell me I can't because of my body type (but keep in mind I haven't had a planned nutrition diet before.)
3) Are protein shakes vital to gaining muscle mass? I used to make some but I never really saw a major improvement over months of working out.
So basically, to sum up my questions: Is it possible for me to gain muscle mass with a nutrition plan when I have a super skinny body type, and if so please help me make a nutrition plan/recommend supplements for me to use on my plan. Note: I am extremely uneducated on body building, so please don't hold back on ANY information you can give me. Please help me, I'm super frustrated and confused and I just want a solid answer to my problem once and for all.
