Shouldn’t I be gaining muscle even though I’m at a caloric deficit?

So...

Overall, I am eating about 45-60% of my daily required calories needed to gain weight/muscle (according to a caloric number determined by my doctors who say I have a VERY FAST metabolism).

140-160 grams of protein a day (I weigh 160 lb)
I workout 4-5x a week.

Sometimes I binge out on 1,000 calories or so worth of candy, 2-3x a week.

Overall, most of my calories come from whey protein drinks, 1% milk, chicken/steak, brown rice/all bran, etc (so quality calories basically , except for the few times a week I binge on candy, on those days I don’t calculate them into my overal calorie consumption for the day)



Here has been my thinking, correct me if wrong please.

I should be gaining muscle, because it’s possible to gain muscle on a caloric deficit for as long as you are eating adequate amounts of protein and eating quality foods (my issue is I’m not eating enough calories though due to poor appetite).

I do binge out on candy, but it can be justified because despite eating candy/sugar it won’t turn into fat because my total calorie consumption for the day is still at a deficit.


That’s been my thought process, am I wrong or right, please give me some clarification.

Even when I remove the sugar intake, my body fat goes back down, yet my muscle mass doesn’t improve.


My questions:

1. Shouldn’t I be gaining muscle even though I’m at a caloric deficit?

2. Do sugars digest almost immediately, and if I’m not working off the sugars then it almost automatically gets stored as fat despite a caloric deficit? (As mentioned before, I thought the only thing that mattered for fat gain was total calories in vs total calories out)

3. Has my way of thinking been wrong?

4. What’s your opinion on adding a gallon of (1%) milk a day to my current diet to help get extra calories, should sugar content of milk be a concern or is it not enough to have a big impact?

5. Any other help advice suggestions etc ?
