Help with Diet

Hi guys,

I'm new here and I really don't know too much about nutrition. I'm looking to burn a bit of fat from my belly, I'm approx 80kg and have a "lanky/lean" body type. Essentially want to reduce my fat % and increase my muscle mass %.

I found this diet online: www(dotcom)muscleandfitness.com/nutrition/healthy-recipes/six-perfect-meals - can you please give me some options on whether this is what I'm looking for?

Any assistance is appreciated.

Cheers!

Ditch macros for clean?

Hey all!

So currently I follow a calorie/macro strict diet, for the most part I eat healthy but sometimes to meet my percentages or stay under I will turn to processed foods (premade shakes, protein bars, etc)... I feel also as though my body fat percentage has been stuck at the same spot for months, even with lowering calories a little, playing with macros, and changing around workouts...

Something I have heard from articles is clean eating really helped to push people to meeting their goals. I've been fiddling with the idea of sticking to meats, veggies, and rice... But I don't trust myself to stick with it while following specific macros (I tend to be 35/35/30)

What are your thoughts on just eating clean, maybe counting calories, but not worring too much on macros?

(I love real asian food... So kind of a traditional asian diet)

Any advice or experience is appreciated :-)

Need help with nutrition (lost 135 lbs to date)

Hey everyone,

I'm Mike, 26 year old male.

Since end ofJanuary I have been doing intermittent fasting (19-5, eating twice a day about 1800-2000 calories in total).

I went from 370lbs to 245 lbs in about 8-9 months. I started by walking on the treadmill for 35 minutes 5-6 days a week, then a couple of months later I was doing some HIIT outside for about 30 mins 3-4 times a week.

I started going to the gym about 2 weeks ago and I feel like I am starting to hit a weight plateau. I am going 3x a week and also do some cardio/HIIT/basketball 3x a week.

In order to overcome my plateau, someone suggested to increase my calories intake to maintenance level (about 3000 for me) for 1-2 months in order to let my body gain some muscle and to rebalance its hormonal level. After 2 months, I would start eating 2000 calories per day and will be burning fat a lot more!

I would like to know what should I be eating.

Right now, my first meal is a 12h. I usually have proteins (eggs, tuna (with a bit of low fat mayo, chicken) and some carbs (oatmeal or rice cakes).
Final meal is at 17h. I eat more carbs and protein (beef or pork)

My problem is that I go to the gym at night (21h-22h) and I don't eat anything before the next day at noon (because of my intermittent fasting). Should I be changing something in my routine (what i eat, number of times I eat, when I go to the gym, etc..)

Thank in advance!

How quickly should I expect to gain muscle back after cutting? Recommended way?

I was 194 when I started and I'll probably be 135 when I first started, almost there, I am at 142 now. I lifted weights at home a little bit before this diet. The diet consisted of a very low cal diet with a medication that helps prevent muscle loss while dieting. No working out was allowed due to the low calorie diet. According to Bod pod tests I will have lost about 50 lbs of fat and 10 lbs of muscle. I'll probably have 105 lbs of lean body mass when I hit 135 If I start bulking afterwards, do you think I'll gain a lot more than the .5 lbs a week of the 10lbs lost? I'm 40 but I look around 30 and don't seem to have any age related problems..

Also, I know there is a lot of articles that may answer this but, there are so many types of recommendations on what workout is best. Before this diet I was lifting weights at home for a few months, eating low cal, but I think I had some muscle gains. With basically a subway diet of about 1,600 calories a day I know I couldn't have gained that much. I was working a lot and just trying to get the fastest healthiest thing I could find but I know it wasn't the best. I was in my best shape about 15 yrs ago but I feel like I have put on muscle fairly well in the past. I guess I would almost be called a beginner again at this point. Does anyone have a suggestion on best diet, weight lifting schedule (some still seem to focus on a specific muscle group while others recommend doing a lot of them in day)

I think the best diet may be based on goals and the initial physique and experience of the person planning to work out. I'd like to bulk but not gain that much fat, still plan to eat clean with maybe one cheat meal a week or every two weeks at a nice restaurant but not overkill (my days of sugary drinks are over)

Thanks for your help!

Macros for weight loss

I figured out the macros for my diet, but I am unsure if its correct or if it will help me reach my goal. My goal is to lose weight while gaining muscle. Im currently going to the gym 4 times/week with 3 days of high intensity sessions after my lifts.

177 lbs
5 ft. 9 in.
20-23% body fat

Macros (TDEE = 2700) (-600 caloric deficit)

177g protein (600 grams chicken breast = protein amount) (1.3 pounds) (1434 calories)
42g fat (3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil) (360 calories)
230g carbs (1.5 cups raw jasmine rice) (240 calories)
2 cups broc**** (68 calories)

I understand that the diet is bland, but I've been eating chicken and jasmine rice for most of my life (Thailand). I just need to start dialing in on exactly how much I consume for the best results.
Any advice on anything would be much appreciated!

Two Month Bulking Results

I can finally post pics on threads so I figured I’d share the results of my first bulk. Well results so far. I’m definitely pleased. My lose skin looks much less saggy. Muscles don’t look too much bigger, if at all, but I’m just getting started. My lift went up, so far, as follows... Bench 155 to 185, Squat 200 to 250, and Deadlift 165 to 225. Any constructive criticism or anything positive would be appreciate.

Should I increase my calories? Weight fluctuation problem.

I'm 20 years old, 188 cm (which is 6'2 I think). I am training 3 times a week with Fierce 5. So I've been tracking my weight since September 10th, here are the results:
10/9-81.1kg
11/9-80.1kg
12/9-80.5kg
13/9-79.6kg
14/9-79.5kg
15/9-79.9kg
16/9-79kg
17/9-79.3kg
18/9-79.2kg
19/9-79.1kg
20/9-80.1kg
21/9-79.3kg
22/9-78.8kg
23/9-79.5kg
24/9-78.9kg
25/9-79.2kg
26/9-79.1kg
27/9-79.1kg
28/9-79.1kg
29/9-78.7kg
30/9-78.2kg

I want to bulk, my current macros are: 175g P, 375g C, 70g F (2830 calories). This is the first time I've been tracking my weight for a long period of time. I don't know if is just water weight or I actually lost a little bit of weight. My lifts are not increasing as much as the creator of the program said (10lbs per week for the lower body lifts, and 5lbs for upper body lifts) so I've only gained a little bit of strength. I don't eat a lot of salt, maybe 4-5g a day. My question is: Should I increase my calories intake?

is it alright drinking whey with milk upon waking or even post workout ?
I heard jym stoppani says that drinking whey with casein is better than whey alone cause when drinking whey with casein the whey absorbs fast and then the casein keeps building protein synthesis slowly ..
and there is the theory that drinking whey with any form of casein , will slow the aborbtion of the whey ..
which is true ?

Loose Skin and fat loss

So I've started doing a diet and will start going back to the gym at about the 1st week of the next month so for now I workout at home. (I follow athlean x for hiit workouts and still lift supersets for my arms and shoulders and chest of 5 circuits each with 2x10kg dumbells) Other than that my back and abs I do free hand and I do this course by Frank Midrano who's workouts are comprised of calisthenics. I also need to mention that 4years ago I was about 96kg (i was 5ft9in) and I dropped through to 66kg in around a month and a week but it was due to over exercise and extreme starvation so I lost a lot of lean muscles too. Not only that but I also got loose skin now. Anyway that's how i started working out on a quest to fix my loose skin without surgery. Currently I'm 5ft11in and I weight 76kg

Anyway with that out of the way this is what diet I've been following recently.

Breakfast
4 egg whites (scrambled, fried or omelette), wholegrain bread (2 slices), oats (50g), milk

Snack
Hummus on oatcakes and 2 green apples and 1 banana

Lunch
Turkey (150g), Swiss cheese and salad on wholegrain bread

Snack
Protein shake, 2 pieces of citrus fruits, black coffee or avocado

Dinner
Stir-bowl chicken (150g) and broc**** (1 cup), brown rice (1 cup)

Snack
Frozen yoghurt (200ml) and protein shake

This amounts to 145g of Carbs 126g of Protein and 34g of fat. (Using myfitnesspal)

Anyway looking at examples of fat body% pictures I would say I still have a lot of fat too lose and lot of lost muscle to build up. Will this diet help me lose body fat and gain muscles? Will my workouts be sufficient? Or if there are better ways to gain muscle and lose fat please do point me to the correct direction. Kinda a bit desperate at this moment.

Edit.- I do not know why they censored broc**** (brocc oli)

Thoughts on this diet

I am 6ft2 and 160 pounds. I just cut from 190 to 160 from basic military training and want to gain back. I’m slightly lean... but a guy that gave me a workout plan told me to reverse diet. I was eating 1800 calories a day now he says do;
265G Carbs
65G Fat
160G Protein
That’s around 2300, I feel like that’s not enough for me to gain. He says add 100 calories every week to gain but stay lean. It’s hard to stick to this though as I feel I’m not getting bigger after 2 weeks of it. I want to just eat 3000 calories a day. Can anyone give me ideas or thoughts on this? Thanks. I’m new here so I’m sorry if this isn’t where it supposed to be or relevant.

1st time bulking and not just getting fat again - tips ?

How do most people find 1st time bulking ? I'm fine at counting cal's for fat loss, so if I get the marco's right it should be easy to eat right clean bulking.

What kind of beginner gains in strength do people see and how long ? What should beginner expect ?

When would someone start to say 'I need to eat more/day, or lift even harder', or 'I'm probably eating too many calories'

How long do average beginners bulk for, before cutting ? Do people just try until they gain 10-20lbs ? or bulk for 6months, or until their lifts are x amount more than where they started ?

I failed all my lifts today

Hi, I listened to the advice ppl gave me 3 months ago. I started weightlifting in June and since then I’ve gotten up to 3x5 190lbs squats, 3x5 115 bench press, and 225 1x5 deadlift. 2 weeks ago, I popped a muscle in my back in the deadlift and it went down by 20 pounds. Today, I squatted 195 3x5 and only got 8 reps in. For bench I did 117 3x5 and I only got 9 reps in. For deadlift I could only pull 205 2 TIMES!!!!!! I’m so pissed right now. I train 3 times a week mondays and fridays being my heavy day and Wednesday being my light day ( the only thing I do different on Wednesday is OH press instead of bench. ) I also do some dumbbell stuff at home to train biceps and triceps. I’m 15 years old 5”8, 145lbs and I eat 2400 calories a day. My question is, how much should I be eating in terms of macros every day? I know it should be at least 3000, but I’m just going on a rant.

Now its time for cutting.. and as I have heard this is the hardest part. But I'm a very motivated guy with high ambitions. All I'm asking for is

what is the key to a good cut? How long does one cut, and how does it work? I've watched several good videos on youtube, but nothing is better than hearing from people with experience.
How do I know how much I should eat to remain muscles but still lose fat? (im 180 cm 92kg)
help or tip would be great! if someone has a "shred/cutting" plan that is nice, please let me know!

I would like to learn more about this, so please teach me!

Does taking a dump/ piss affect muscle gain?

Ok so first off, I'm not the most experienced gym goer out there so if this seems like a stupid question then I'm sorry. Let me just give you and idea of my thought process.
If I eat a lot then I have that nutrition in my body which then has to be utilised in the gym otherwise a lot of the calories/nutrition will come out as waste in excretion (I don't know if this is actually true or not, that is for you to tell me).
My dilemma is, if I take a dump between when I consume loads of calories and when I go gym, does that mean that I have lost some of the nutrition that I had from eating? In the case of protein, does taking a piss get rid of protein before I used it in the gym?
I know this seems dumb but I just want to be able to take a dump without fear that I have lost some of my nutrition, so any replies are greatly appreciated.

Bulk or cut ( Help I'm lost )

Hey there thank you for stopping by my post I'm looking for guidance if I should either bulk or cut.

Here are my stats :
Current weight as of today - 67kg (147.4 pounds )
Height : 172+- ( Around 5'7 )
Body fat : 14 - 17% ( The best estimate i can give at this point of time )

Quick introduction..
About a year or so ( around 12 - 14 months ) I was extremely overweight for my height I was close to 100kgs ( 220 pounds ).
After a year I managed to lose 30 - 33kgs which was a big accomplishment for me. I did it all by myself with some research that I have done because I was just sick of my body and how I looked like.
For the first few weeks I just adjusted my diet cut out the bad stuff like candy etc but it wasnt until a month or so after that I joined my local gym.
I didnt really train smart I just did whatever there was to be honest it was my fault for not seeking information online I would guess most noobs starting out do similar mistakes.
So fast forward a year I am down to my current weight of around 67kg and I am just not satisfied with how my body is looking like.
I feel like I still have alot of fat on my body around my stomach area and my chest. I feel like I am skinny fat or whatever the term is that people use. I look good in a shirt but when I take it off you can see the fat obviously.
And now I came to a stop where I just dont know what to do, I am not sure if I should cut down even more of my fat or do a slow 6 - 12months ( 10 - 20 pounds ) bulk then cut down so I actually have some visible muscle on me.
I would be looking to follow a strength program like a 5x5 or any others that there are out there.

Please any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated I am really lost on what I should do.

Food Challenges while cutting

This is sort of just a general question. I’ve seen this trend of food challenges grow and grow and it made me wonder how much one terrible meal could affect someone’s diet. Currently, I’m at 166lbs and eating around 2000 calories a day and I’ve steadily been losing about a pound a week (while still getting in between 170-200g of protein a day). How much would doing something like eating 15 Big Macs (8,250 calories total) in one day affect my, or anyone’s progress, if done like once a month?

Layne Norton on Joe Rogan show today discussing Keto & science

Quote:

I will be making an appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast this week. If that isn’t sweet enough, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino will be joining me. As you know, Dom is a cancer researcher as well as a proponent of the ketogenic diet (in addition to being a practitioner of it).

We will be there, talking the science, having a friendly discussion, and I hope to see you all there.

Finally, you are probably wondering when this takes place. I’ll be recording it at 1pm Eastern time this Friday, September 28th. It will also be a live broadcast. Rest assured, we’ll keep you posted.

Later,
Layne

Can too much olive oil clog the arteries?

Never heard of this til now, saw someone say too much oil will clog the arteries. Is this real or bs?

I'm taking 10 tablespoons of olive oil daily for bulking. Does this amount pose any health risks?

Your go to mass gaining meal on a low budget

Money is tight. Ill get a nice steak here and there but my go to has always been pasta. I can't afford to eat salmon, steak, and fresh lean beef everyday. Curious as to what kind of meals you make for yourself that are fairly cheap.

Skinny fat, BULK or CUT first?

Hello! Im 20, 155 lb, 5'10 and around 18% bf
Im skinny fat with little muscle and most of that fat around my belly and legs

I've been going to the gym for about a month now and made some noob gains and increase in my strength, currently eating about 3000 calories (400g carbs, 180g protein, 70g fats), however Im not sure if I should bulk as I don't wanna end up with 25% bf and looking fat

What do you guys think? Should i cut first and get skinny or bulk and get fat?

First image is before lifting and second one is after 1 month (pump)

Thanks!

Heated Meal Prep Bag??

Hey folks!

New here and just trying to get my meal planning all figured out in my head, and it occurred to me, "It sure would be nice not to have to reheat my meal prep!"

Maybe it's a long-shot, but... Does anyone know of any bags out there that can keep a meal or three hot throughout the workday??

ammonia smell in sweat, nutrition seems on point.. what am I doing wrong?

Hello fellow gym-goers,

39 male, 82kg, about 18% body fat. Been working out hard for the past 3 months, with the aid of a personal trainer who's a big guy that used to compete in bodybuilding.

I work out 6x per week for about 90 minutes each time, on a 3 day split which I repeat twice. I have a big portion of oatmeal every morning with a little bit of sweetened yogourt and a single piece of dark chocolate. Then I hit the gym about 1 hour after this initial meal. I have a pre-workout mix and glutamine. Following the workout I have a protein shake with 2.8% milk. And then I have some pretty clean meals throughout the day consisting of chicken breast, broc****, white potatoes, eggs, cheese and nuts in moderation. Then around bedtime I have another protein shake.

I don't feel that I'm overdoing the protein intake. I also don't feel like my diet is that low on carbs. Every time I shower post-workout I get this strong smell of ammonia, and it's also on my clothes despite hand-washing my clothes daily (enough to get the smell out completely).

I did a full blood panel test a few months ago, prior to starting this training mind you, but there was nothing weird or unusual about my results. I've also experienced the same thing in the past.

I been reading about this and it seems to often be related to not having enough carbs in the diet or too much protein.. but I feel like I am getting a lot of carbs from that morning oatmeal and then veggies throughout the day, and I feel like I'm getting enough but not too much protein.

Any other idea what might be causing this? Should I just try to have even more carbs? Other than that I have nothing to complain about, I have lots of energy in the gym and I'm making decent gains considering I'm still at the beginning of this journey.

Question on Deficit

So I am burning roughly 500-800 calories a day in the gym. My maintenance currently is 3900. I am eating about 3000 calories a day with a cheat meal every 2 weeks. Should I eat back the 500-800 calories so I stay in my original deficit. For my a 1400-1700 calorie deficit sounds a little extreme.

I'm lost

Hi all,

Currently i'm kinda lost and don't know exactly what to do.. I'm 155 lbs , 15% fat and 5 feet 10.
I'm already having a double chin, fat on my chest and back but i'm only 155 lbs and my goal is 170 lbs 12% fat.
Now i tried to bulk but then i look in the mirror and see my chubby face and then i try to cut and i'm skinny asf again and so it continues.. Idk what to do anymore.. i've attached a recent picture of me.
I need something like build muscle and lose fat at the same time..
My macros now: 250 carb , 190 protein , 80 fat
Maybe should i try high fat low carb?

Any advice?

Thanks

Can a month of lowered calories make you catabolize?

Hi. In the past two months I ate around 2400 calories and lifted heavy, and I saw some great results. Now my trainer is making me eat less week after week for a total of a month before going back up again.

1st week P160, C250, F70, cal. 2270
2nd week P160, C200, F75, cal. 2115
3rd week P160, C150, F80, cal. 1960
4th week P160, C100, F85, cal. 1805

And then I'll jump back up and start lifting heavy again. He says I need to do this to avoid getting too fat, but I'm slightly worried I might lose all the gains I made in these past two months. So my question is, what exactly causes catabolism? When does the muscle start to actually catabolize? It might be a stupid question and I might just be paranoid, but I'd like an answer because everything I'm finding is pretty generic. Thank you.

Not loosing fat

I am on calories restriction for more than 2 months now, i am eating 1600 calories and i weigh 92 kgs.
and i am also doing cardio pretty much everyday, but i am not loosing any fat.
Please clear me one thing does the quality of calories counts or not ?
i believed that you can eat anything but in your limits of calories restriction numbers.
but now i am starting to believe that maybe i need to restrict my carbs too which i think is too many ( 200 gm per day)
i add protein and fat in my diet too but carbs always win in the end of the day.

Please tell me if i need to restrict carbs in my diet ? is that why i am not loosing weight?

Diet Advice

Started to “bulk” a little over a month ago. I went from 185-200lbs. Gym 6 days a week for 2 hours a day. Jumped right into 6 meals coming from 2/3 per day. Breakfast 8 egg whites and a cup of oatmeal, 4 meals of 6oz chicken and 1c of white rice and for dinner 6oz ground beef and 1c of rice. Havent missed a meal yet and sticking to the diet. Should i cut out carbs after meal 4? Ive gotten stronger since i started but my L tshirts are getting tight lol. Thanks for the help

GM diet during no gym period - advice needed

Hi guys,

So my overall goal is fat loss (eventually gain muscle aswell but that’s at a later stage).
Unfortunately due to some skin problem I am unable to go to the gym for about 7-8 days. So to not gain weight during this period, as there is no gym, and one tends to eat bad too during no gym period I decided to give GM diet a shot.

I just finished my day 2. For those of you who do not know what a GM Diet is , its a 1 week diet only, just a small google search and about 1 min of,ur time will give u the whole gist of it.

Anyhow, I am king of confused whether I should continue with it or not... as there is no protein, and I’ve read that it causes muscle loss and that one tends to gain all the weight back as soon as u get off the diet.

I understand it’s not a long term solution or sustainable solution like most diets aren’t....but I just wanted to do it during my 1 week of no gym period, so I keep loosing fat even on this rest period...

Your advice and recommendations will be appreciated

Sharp pain in left leg on front of thigh going into hip area?? Causes

Every few weeks/ month ill get this pain in my left leg in my hip and front quad area, tends to be more in the hip. Its at its worst when breaking in between sets and go to move slowly or suddenly it lights up. Itll hurt occasionally when i walk making me limp a bit but i do sprints on treadmill before and after my workout where i sprint and i never feel the pain when running. It comes and goes every few weeks and lingers for a few days, could it be tied to dehydration or something? I also stretch before a workout.

Carnivore diet & bowel cancel.

Im looking at trying out the carnivore diet for reasons. Looking at working up to it and sustain for 30 days and then work back down, may stick at it longer/shorter seeing how the results pan out.

Ive looked at all the negatives and had a bunch of questions of my own. The last one that snags me is the relationship between meat consumption and bowel cancer. For the short time I plan to try this out it wont have any effect on that im sure but as a long term solution?

Are there any carnivores on here? (really wish there was a better name for it as it sounds lame and missleading).

thanks
