So I've been consistently going to the gym for a little more than a year and a half. I started off with the intention of losing weight, so having a caloric deficit was my main focus, but I still did lifting. I shaped up my diet and started eating cleaner, and eventually dropped down to around 165 pounds - maybe a 15-20% body fat I would guess.
From this point I started to eat more and lift weights more consistently and properly. I am up to 180 pounds now, with not really a noticeable change in fat.
My concern is that it seems like I haven't even gained 20 pounds of muscle in the past year and a half. I think it's probably due to my diet. I've been really trying to cut out any sugar and excess amounts of bread and things. I try to eat the most amount of protein that I can, but sometimes it's tough to get to 2000+ calories with only clean food.
My question:
If I'm trying to gain more muscle mass, is it better to eat whatever I can to get to 2000+ calories (to avoid a deficit) or to only eat the healthy food and if I end up in a caloric deficit - then oh well?
Hopefully that makes sense.
