Eating Before Working Out?

Planning on going on a cut. I have heard and read a lot of mixed things about eating before working out.

Generally, I don't struggle with energy even when I am low on carbs.

I work out in the evening. Right now, my diet plan has me eating about 3 hours before I work out. It's a snack, so not a terribly big meal, but it has some carbs, protein and fat.

I am wondering if this is good enough. I've read that having a protein shake before working out is ideal, but that seems to have mixed favorability.

Thoughts?
