Potentially getting my gallbladder removed... help?

I was diagnosed with gallstones back in January after having excruciating gallbladder attacks while on vacation. Back then my doctor told me they were small and could potentially resolve themselves by either passing through or dissolving. I knew of the potential for surgery, but was relieved when he told me that. As a precaution I was given a referral to a general surgeon which I kept postponing due to both work and my fear (mainly fear, to be honest...). However, each week or so I experience an attack, some very mild, some painful enough where I had to stop working (which is not good as a personal trainer).
I'm having my consultation this Thursday, and I'm extremely nervous. My mother tells me they can simply go in and remove the stones causing issues, however I have not heard of this type of procedure before through any of my internet searches. Aside from the gallstones, my gallbladder itself has a lining that was deemed the upper limits of "normal". I'm 99% sure they're just going to suggest to take the whole sucker out... which brings me to my second concerns..
I've heard digestion and weight maintenance/loss is negatively affected post surgery. Some people have said that they cannot maintain or lose weight no matter what they do; exercise, diet, etc. I've also heard they have a much higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and fatty liver.

I've been serious about bodybuilding for almost a year now, and I have hopes to one day in the future to compete (when I'm ready, not close right now but someday), but if I have this procedure, it looks like it will be impossible.

Has anyone here had their gallbladder removed?? Or had gallstones despite having a pretty healthy lifestyle? Any information from anyone who's had this done please tell me about it!

I'm nervous, uncertain, and could really use some reassurance.
