Hi all.
I'm very new to fitness but after many years of eating unhealthily and not doing much exercise I decided it's time for me to get in shape and work towards a lean muscular body.
I've lost 8kg since the beginning of this year by doing purely cardio, however a couple of weeks ago I started going to the gym 3 times a week following a beginners workout plan to build muscle as well.
My current stats are:
Age: 21
Weight: 87kg/192lb
Height: 188cm/6ft 2
Bodyfat: Around 21% (Calibrated by fit quest machine)
I am however confused as to what to do next. I want to build a lean and muscular body however I've read that to build muscle you need to be eating a calorific surplus. I am very wary of doing this however as I'm already 21% BF and I've worked so hard so far to lose the 8kg through cardio since January. I also however have read that you won't gain any muscle (and will likely lose some of it) if you eat a calorific deficit, and I don't want this either as I don't have much muscle to lose.
So far what I have been doing is eating my maintenance calorific needs through a high protein diet whilst going to the gym three times a week. Surprisingly, yesterday after working out for 2 weeks the fitquest body composition machine at my gym told me I have managed to lose 2kg of fat whilst gaining around 2kg of muscle. (I do appreciate that this is likely inaccurate but would I be correct in thinking that it at least shows my body is in someway responding positively to my beginner's routine/diet? However this still doesn't make sense to me as I've read it's impossible to lose fat whilst gaining muscle so perhaps the measurement was completely wrong and I need to do something else) .
Should I therefore stick with what I'm doing?
Or would you suggest that I do something else?
I will attach a few pictures of my body as it is now if that would help making the best course of action clearer.
Any help at all would be hugely appreciated as I literally don't know where to start/ feel like I'm just randomly doing stuff and hoping it works at the moment.
Cheers
