There's no serious thread about lectins and lifting on the internet, so i hereby declare that this one should be the one.
Lectins?
First of all, a quick intro for all of you who haven't heard about lectins.
There's this guy Dr. Gundry and he wrote this book called 'The Plant Paradox: The Hidden Dangers in "Healthy" Foods That Cause Disease and Weight Gain' in which he argues that plants, like animals, don't want to be eaten. He says that plants evolved in such way that a certain type of protein which is found in many plants - called "Lectin" is actually very toxic to humans. He says that lectins cause inflammation of your body, they fck up your gut, cause leaky gut syndrome and that this is the starting point of maaany diseases, among others - autoimmune diseases. The book got very popular in the last few years, lots of people are claiming that it helped them and so on.
Now i know that this might be the new "gluten free" fad, but i actually have an autoimmune disease and i'd really like to try lectin free diet. I'm also really eager to try it because when i remember some periods of my life when my disease got better, i was actually eating less lectin-rich food, by accident and because of certain circumstances. However, i need some help and opinions, and hopefully some real world experience with a lectin free diet and lifting.
So, you might be wondering - what exactly contains lectins? Short answer: LOTS of plans - grains, legumes, nightshades...
You can find the yes/no list here: gundrymd (dot) com/wp-content/pdf/Plant-Paradox-Shopping-LIst.pdf
So if you take a detailed look at the list you'll probably ask yourself - what about...
Carbs?!
My main issue with this diet is - how the hell do i get carbs? I'd need at least 200 grams of carbs per day to match my current goals.
I like to lift and i like to lift heavy - i want to eat a balanced diet of carbs, fat and protein. And yes, i've tried keto for 2 months last year and i was weak AF, i wouldn't try lifting on keto with my current program (which i'd very much like to keep)
So, what, should i just eat 2kg of yams and green bananas per day or what? That doesn't seem that good to me(in his book, Dr. Gundry argues that green bananas contain a very small amount of lectins)
I'm really trying to figure this out, so let's discuss - has anyone tried this diet? How did you deal with carbs? Any results?
