How did you decide how much protein you need a day?

I read about it and I see there really isn't a definitive answer for how much is needed. Do you have any tips for finding what's best for me? Should I just try change it up every month or so but keep the workout schedule and calorie intake and see when do I grow the most? Would you recommend going to an expert to get this down instead of training inefficiently for a while? It's all kind of confusing, I apologize for asking such an obvious question, I did look around before asking.
