Can I do a combination of recomp + bulk?

I want to gain lean muscle, but I don't want to gain a lot of fat. I keep hearing people talk about bulking versus recomping, and how bulking is better for gaining mass while recomping is slower for muscle gains but will help with body-fat....

...my question is, why can't I do both?

A bulk is when you eat over maintenance to put on mass: some of which will be in terms of muscle, and some will just be fat.

A recomp is when your body wants to build muscle but you're not giving it enough food, so it starts using your fat storage for energy instead.

Why can't I do both of these things? They don't seem to contradict each other.

For example, say I eat 150-200 calories above maintenance every day, and 170 grams of protein. Those 150-200 calories I am eating above maintenance are NOT a lot, and should not lead to me gaining fat. Almost all of it should go towards muscle gains. And if my body feels like it needs more than just 150-200 calories to build mass, it can then just take some of that energy from my body fat, no?

The end result should be that I grow muscle without gaining fat.????
