High to moderate body fat levels and maintaining muscle mass?

It seems from my perspective there is a link between maintaining higher bodyfat levels and muscle mass. Why would the body breakdown muscle mass if it has this abundance of fat/fatty acids? Especially fat being high in energy. I am not disputing there a number of variables and factors when it comes to sustaining muscle mass including calories and protein but it seems just being in a deficit, why would the body sacrifice muscle, that is below one's set point as fuel when its abundance is in excess bodyfat?
