Calorie deficit - protein-focused

Hi,

I am a 38 yr old 5'8 male and for the vast majority of my life, I hovered between 143 and 148 lbs. Last year, I ate very poorly and got addicted to junk food. I was eating upwards of 6000 calories a day, and that led to a 22 pound weight gain in less than a year.

When I discovered I'd gone from 12% bf to 29%, it was a wakeup call, but because my habits had gotten so bad, I found them very difficult to change. Trying to give up pizza, pasta, candy, and really, almost every food I loved seemed insurmountable, despite spending my whole life being skinny prior to the last year.

Given my struggles, my trainer told me to go back to basics. He calculated my tdee at 2315 calories, and told me I could eat anything I wanted up to 1815 cals/day as long as I hit 162g of protein.

5 weeks ago, I started this diet and lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks. But the last three weeks have resulted in no change. I weigh the same, and I haven't lost anything off my waist. Obviously, very disappointing when I'm only eating 1800 cals. I do drink a lot of Diet Coke, like 4 cans per day. I know it's not great for me, but it's calorie free. Seems like others I see out there drink it but have no issue staying in shape.

I work out at least 4x/wk, sometimes 5x. Half of those are heavy weight circuits, other half are one hour bootcamps.

When I weighed 145, I ate sugar and plenty of other crap, I just wasn't eating 6000 cals/day. But now I'm eating salads and other healthy meals, with the occasional cheat (but still staying below 1815 cals), and I'm not seeing results.

I've read the boards and people preach so many different diets - e.g. Limit carbs, keto, intermittent fasting, etc. My trainer says that limiting carbs doesn't make much difference, nor does it matter when you eat them - it's really just about eating at a calorie deficit.

I assume I should be losing fat off my waist and pounds off the scale (though I probably also added some muscle). But overall, what am I doing wrong?
