essential amino acids and protein supplements

Morning all.
I've never bothered with amino acids as a separate supplement, preferring to stick with the ones already added to my protein supplements, however, I have a couple of queries that I hope you can help me with..
1. What are the advantages (if any) of adding a separate (essential or BCAA) amino acid supplement to my current regime (currently only Whey Protein Isolate) ?
2. How easy is it to overdose on amino acids and how dangerous, particularly if there are the same amino acids in my protein supplement ?
