I don't like the constant screaming and his cult followers. But I like his overall message - be realistic about your goals, not everyone is going to be able to maintain a "ripped" physique. Focus on gradually building muscle at a healthy body fat level that you are personally comfortable at.
I do think bulk/cut has an edge over "maingaining" wrt hypertrophy, but I wonder what the whole bulk/cut mentality does to body image issues
