How much protein is too much protein?

I know a general basis of understanding for BBers is that 1 pound of bodyweight = 1 gram of protein. I always tend to go above that (idk, just need to increase my carb calorie intake)
this sparked the idea for me: how much protein is too much? I know that apart from kidney disease, there arent too many serious side effects, but still, why have extra protein that really is useless and could be used for clean carb/fat.
