Does number of reps really matters ?

Hey, i have a question. I have a few exercises, where i cant do more reps. My main goal is bulking/gaining muscle, i have normal fullbody training, but especially with body-weight exercises like pull-ups or dips, i can do like 3-4 reps max. I red that for muscle building is best to have 7-12 reps, but i can do max 3. But question is -> if i go these 3 reps to the failure, to the max, can i build some muscle from it, or its just for strenght ? Thanks
