Natural hunger cravings and bodyfat set point?

I recall hearing the term "bodyfat set point" thrown about in the past, where supposedly we all have a body fat set point that our body likes to be at, if you are under this food cravings increase and if you are over it they are lower is this really true? and is there any scientific theory behind it?

I find it interesting that there are so many people who remain the same sort of weight for seemingly most of their life, i have friends and family members who have never counted a calorie in their life yet they have remained the exact same size for years, How are they able to never count calories yet remain at a stable weight? Their body's for what ever reason balance out cravings to enable this, Whats most interesting is that i know people who are not obese but on the fatter side that also remain the same level of fatness (lol) for years, infact these people are the most interesting because its not like they overeat constantly and gain more and more weight each year ( some people of course do but i know many people on the fatter side that remain the same size), their body appears to have settled at a particular weight/bodyfat.

Do you think this could be genetic and that some people truly do have bodyfat set points which makes it easier or harder for them to remain at a lower or higher bodyfat? You have "hard gainers" that struggle to gain etc.

Before i started lifting i was always slim remained the same weight, ate what ever i wanted when i wanted everybody would say " i don't know where you put it all" because i appeared to eat so much yet remain slim.

I have been tempted to stop counting calories for a while and just see what bodyfat % my natural hunger cravings take me too. Anybody here stop counting calories and find they settled at a particular weight/bodyfat?
