Intermittent Fasting and Counting Calories

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and fitness/nutrition in general. I'm still trying to wrap my head around protein intake and how much to eat for my goals of weight loss. I have just adopted intermittent fasting, and would like to know a few things.

— Is counting calories necessary, or is just encouraged? I find it hard to understand all of the numbers (how to count the calories per gram of foods, how to count calories for things that you buy out rather than prepare etc.) so would like to know if it is okay to eyeball things, and opt for things that are "healthier" rather than deep-fried chicken sticks.
— What are the negative effects of not meeting your protein intake required to build muscle? My goal is to lose fat and gain a bit of muscle along the way, but if I don't get enough protein in during the day, what are the negative effects of this, or is it that I just won't be optimising my muscle building?

Any help with the above queries is much appreciated! Looking forward to seeing some results, so if I'm making a mistake, any constructive criticism is welcome :-)
