Protein amounts

A lot of routines call for a g of protein per lb bodyweight. This seems like an ungodly amount of protein. Do we really need to eat that much protein to get gains, even if you are an intermediate/advanced lifter?

Also what's the research that tells us we need to eat that much protein?
