Beginner gains and cutting

From what I’ve read on this forum, people are often advised to cut when they are overweight and just starting to lift. But doesn’t that limit or work against the ability for beginner gains? Shouldn’t they just lift like crazy for a few months to get as many beginner gains as they can and then cut once their gains level off?
