What happens if you delay your post-exercise protein ingestion ?

I usually work out in the mornings (sometime between 7am to 10am). I then usually eat a filling meal (my breakfast!) soon after.

On the rare occassion, I work out in the (late) afternoon.

So here's my questions:
1. What happens If you don't eat right after you work out? Do your muscles not grow?
2. Should we eat(protein) right after working out if we want muscle growth?

Strategy for returning to previous best shape after long layoff

Hi,

Please read entirety to fully understand the situation.

I want to look like I did in my profile pic and most recent progress photos, which were taken 7-8 years ago.

At that point in time I weighed about 175 lbs, and had been training seriously for 3 years.

After this peak in approx 2015, I quit lifting until 2020.

In 2020 I did a year long cut from 210 down to 165, at a rate of 1lb lost per week, and found that my muscle mass was nowhere near what it was in my profile pic. There seemed to be no 'muscle memory' of the peak state.

This led to me 'giving up' (part due to serious depression) and during 2021, I didn't exercise at all and returned to my current weight.

Now I am 205 lbs and want to lose fat again, but without the tragic low muscle mass that killed my motivation last cut. I want to get my mass back to where it was in the 175 lb profile pic without ever having to dip below 175.

What should I do strategically to get to this goal? I notice that I am potentially in the ideal camp for a dramatic recomp.

Should I perhaps do a maintenance recomp here at 205lbs until my strength levels get close to the profile pic strength levels, and only afterwards cut?

Or should I cut again but much more slowly, like only a 100-200 calorie deficit this time?

Or do you think my only choice is to cut to well below 175, and only regain muscle once in a massing phase? My 2020 cut proved that on a 500 calorie deficit I was not able to come anywhere near regaining the muscle mass of the profile pic, so I am very fearful of repeating that.

Potential reasons my 2020 cut resulted in low muscle mass at the end:

1. I think I was getting closer to 0.7g protein per lb instead of a better number like 1g per lb.

2. I lost strength consistently throughout the cut perhaps because I switched philosophies from High Intensity + Low Volume (the philosophy of profile pic me) to a Lower Intensity + High Volume philosophy (more along the lines of Renaissance Periodization).

3. Depression and anxiety

4. The sheer overall length of the diet. Even though I took long maintenance periods to recover from diet fatigue throughout 2020, it ultimately was still a year straight of no caloric surplus, which did hell to my psychology.

Cheers everyone. Please help me get back to a respectable physique.

Eat like this every day?

Hi am I supposed to eat like this every day? Im concerned for my health down the line for overeating. I ate 2 breasts of chicken, 3 glasses of milk, 4 eggs, a 425g can of salmon (for apparently ~100g protein) and some veggies, fruit, nuts, grains throughout for recommend ~185g protein intake. Will get whey isolate soon. Am I supposed to do this just about every single day until I die? Won't I get diseases eating like this? I feel like I'm falling into the elites traps of dying early and catching dimentia, brain salmonella, or heart problems due to eating so many animal products with all their hormones, steroids etc. I don't also want to spend more money than I have on animal free products because it's so dam expensive. So what now? We're all crazy and screwed.

Hypertension - how much can temporary stress increase it?

Well, I just went to the doctor today and my blood pressure was concerningly high. They retested it about 10 minutes later and it had gone down about 10 points, but I was still in the range of hypertension on the second taking. I was however quite stressed both times: I really don't like being in a doctor's office and I dread having my blood drawn. I had a bad experience once when I had an unexpected vasovagal response to it and went out cold and unbreathing for over a minute - all the nurses were surrounding me trying to get me to come to when I woke up in a cold sweat, and I had a migraine and very low energy for days afterwards. Ever since then the thought of a needle going into my arm stresses me greatly, so going to the doctor puts my body on "high alert" I guess. I didn't need bloodwork this time, so it did not happen, but every single time I get blood taken except for once when I was looking away and straining all of my nerves to think about something else, I go out like someone put a chloroform rag over my face, and usually not briefly.

So, I think the anxiety that that was about to happen again might have skewed my numbers. I had it taken in January and it was at the high end of the normal range at that time. I have since then gained weight and have generally had a poorer diet, so it very well could have legitimately developed since then. I'm curious for those who monitor theirs regularly, what kind of range you typically see based upon temporary stress factors?

There's no question I'm going to do things like mitigate alcohol consumption, reduce sodium in my diet, and increase my cardiovascular work in my training, because I don't want to be complacent with a guaranteed negative health marker. I don't have a way to check it at home, however.

The comeback meal plan

Good afternoon guys,

I would love to get some feedback on my plan, I have spent some time building it and finding it complete - would appreciate if someone could have a glance, in case of any poor decision I have made. In terms of macros/choices.

I am calling it the comeback plan as I have been training for 3 years constantly with 2 years pause now - since gym break I lost some weight and muscles but overall feeling good due to heavy work and active lifestyle.

My goal is to gain muscle and recomposite body. I am 29yo, 78kg bodyweight and 182 cm height, heavy physical job and active lifestyle.

My macros were counted as :

Calorie 3,510 kcal
Carb 439g
Fat 117g
Protein 176g

So i have adjusted my meal plan according these :

calorie /carb/ fat/ protein

Breakfast: 805/ 123/ 23/ 34
Snack : 150/ 14/ 4/ 12
Lunch: 572/ 80/ 14/ 27
Pre Workout: 550/ 80/ 24/ 17
Dinner: 774/ 64/ 44/ 35

Also I'm having before bed casein, post workout protein and 3 bananas as snack during the day not mentioned above but counted in total macros.

I'm more likely looking for some pillar to start at, then would adjust macros accordingly with help of the fitness app

Breakfast: oatmeal, protein, almonds, fruit, honey
Snack: cottage, rice cakes, cucumber, fruit
Lunch: chicken, broccoli, rice, olive oil
Preworkout: egg fried rice
Post workout: protein
Dinner: sweet potato, minced beef steak, asparagus, green beans + bacon, avocado
Bed: casein

As macros were counted by fitness pal, I might start a bit lower to get used to, I am not planning to go all in right away but maybe in a week or so.

My question is if i could go like that , if aren't any obvious mistakes or anyways it could improve, as it might be beginning for me now, I am going to approach it with 100% efforts and passions.
Working out been always something what i loved to do however my personal life led me to have a break therefore be id be grateful for any addives or critique you guys might have

thank you

Pete

Greens powders?

So I started adding greens powder, specifically this…

https://naturelo.com/products/raw-gr...s&_ss=e&_v=1.0

To my wife’s and my morning shakes with a scoop of syntha- 6, oz of milk, 6 oz of coffee and 3g of creatine. Neither of us can really detect the taste and figured this is a good way to get even more fruits and veggies in our diet.

Anyway, what is the general consensus on greens powders? Is it really just freeze dried ingredients ground up or just hype?

Disclaimer: we eat a combined 6-8 serving of fruits and veggies a day. Getting more with our schedules and food budget would be problematic.

Can someone assess my macros & also my approach to meal prepping & my diet system

I am wanting to get into bodybuilding but I want to fix my diet first. I have worked out my calories as they currently stand, and also my macros.
I have also devised a system where I will meal prep 2/3 of my meals every day, sticking to my chosen macros and calories.
Then my 3rd meal I will eat whatever I want as long as it fills the remaining calories (mostly balanced or healthy).
Hopefully someone can look at my macros and also my approach and have some input.

Thanks!

IDEAL MACROS BASED ON A MODERATE ACTIVITY LEVEL:

2337 calories per day on a cut
2837 calories per day whilst maintaining
3337 calories per day on a bulk

-You only really need 0.82g of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass - However when bulking I will increase it to 0.9g/1lbm when maintaining and 1g/lbm when bulking to increase protein calorie ratio
0.82g of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass when cutting (this would currently be 122g of protein for me @ 488kcal)
0.9g of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass when maintaining (this would currently be 134g of protein for me @ 536kcal)
1g of protein per 1 pound of lean body mass when bulking or maintaining (this would currently be 149g of protein for me @ 596kcal)

-Increase fat by 0.05 when maintaining & 0.1 when bulking to increase fat calorie ratio
0.5g of fat per 1 pound of total body mass when cutting (this would currently be 92g of fat for me @ 828kcal)
0.55g of fat per 1 pound of total body mass when maintaining (this would currently be 101g of fat for me @ 911kcal)
0.6g of fat per 1 pound of total body mass when bulking (this would currently be 110g of fat for me @ 993kcal)

Fill up the remaining calories with carbohydrates:
for cutting 1021kcal - 255g carbs --- This ratio is roughly: 20p/35f/45c
to maintain 1390kcal - 347g carbs --- This ratio is roughly: 20p/30f/50c
for bulking 1748kcal - 437g carbs --- This ratio is roughly : 20p/30f/50c

-700kcal per meal (3 meals) + a 237kcal snack (2337kcals) on a rest day
+ 320kcal balanced shake on an exercise day

-An ideal 237kcal snack should roughly have: (12g of protein - 48kcal) - (9g of fat - 81kcal) - (28g of carbs - 112kcal)
-Each 700kcal meal should roughly have: (37g of protein - 148kcal) - (27g of fat - 243kcal) - (76g of carbs - 304kcal)

-Approximately a 20p/35f/45c split
-1 of these meals can be anything unplanned - As long as the calories don't go over 700kcal - Macros don't matter that much for this meal
-keep 4/7 of the unplanned meals healthy or at least balanced
-An ideal snack would have a 33/33/33 macro split - This is not really essential though
-An exercise shake should have as close to a 33/33/33 macro split as possible
-Any variation on total daily calorie expenditure should be adjusted by increasing or decreasing snack calories
-Any additional calories from snacks or desert should be logged and then burnt off via additional cardio
-Required macros & calories should be assessed and readjusted every 4 weeks

Macro Help Needed! Took 3 months off (Had a baby)

I need some advice on what my daily caloric intake should be along with macro split

BACKGROUND: Over the last 2.5 years I've used a coach for macros and workout routine and was religious with diet and hitting the gym 5-6 days a week. The last 4 months my diet has gone to **** and my workouts were averaging 2-3 days a week as I just had a baby boy. I was decent during the week with healthy food choices and hitting my protein goal but the weekends were bad. If i had to guess i would say I was about 2200 - 2700 cals especially on the weekend.

When I was at my best was (attached pic):
158-160lbs
24% body fat
50% muscle mass

My Macro split was:
1800 cals (deficit)
5 low carb days: 67g of carb (15%), 190g protein (40%), 91g fat(45%)
2 high carb days: 225g of carb (50%), 180g protein (40%), 20g fat(10%)

Today I am :
172 lbs
27.4% body fat
50% muscle mass

Back at the gym 5 days with 30 min of walking per day. My question is should i drop back to my old macro split, keep same % split but maybe go to 2200 cals, or do something completely different?

Thanks for the help in advance!
