Diet up to or reverse diet before vacation?

Interested in experiences on both ends. Some theories suggest you're more prone to fat gain and multiplying fat cells immediately a long diet. Some suggest you can only truly "build back up" your metabolism so much by reverse dieting. Would be interested in studies and experiences on both options:

- Diet right up until vacation. Enjoy a big surplus for a week.
or
- Diet down to a good weight, reverse calories around maintenance, then enjoy a big surplus for a week.

I'm going to enjoy my vacation one way or the other. I'm more just curious of the effect on both approaches before the vacation.
