Nutrition for a Newbie

I just joined a gym near me a couple of weeks ago and am new to working out. Currently, I'm trying to figure out how much protein I need to start building muscle. I weigh 102lbs and the trainer I talked to recommended that I eat 2,300 calories a day with 35% of it being protein. However, I think what he recommended is too much because I've read online that eating too much protein is bad for you, so consuming between .35g to .8g of protein per pound of body weight is ideal. But, those figures would put my protein macro at less than 20%.

I would really appreciate any advice on what is the optimal amount of protein I should be eating to start building muscle.
