The impacts of a caloric deficit on improving aerobic endurance?

During a cut we usually talk about trying to minimize muscle loss and abandon all hopes of putting on additional muscle and making any significant strength gains. But how does a caloric deficit affect your body's ability to improve cardiovascular ability and aerobic performance? I used to play basketball in high school, i haven't played for years, i'm going to start playing again and i'm currently cutting. My cardio and fitness levels are complete trash right now compared to where they used to be, i am wondering how a deficit is going to impact my ability to get fit and increase cardio while dropping fat?
