Nutrition to build muscle

Besides macronutrients, additional factors affect muscle development.

"First and foremost, adequate calories are a priority for gaining muscle and fueling the resistance training sessions that help with building muscle," says Erik Bustillo, registered dietician and strength coach at train8nine in Miami, FL. "This and lifting weights/resistance training is the most important factor for building muscle."1

That means you may consume any combination of macronutrients—protein, carbs, and fats—but Bustillo advises being cognizant of what's best.

Protein aids healing, while carbs provide energy for workouts. "Fat isn't anabolic like protein and carbs, but it provides calories and supports hormone levels, so it's essential," says Bustillo.
