i'm guessing whole food protein would have a greater thermic effect than a liquid
there's been a study showing from the liquid drinks whey had the highest, followed by casein and finally soy.
haven't found one comparing equal grams of protein from an animal source such as beef, chicken or fish. would have to be a very lean meat such as chicken or turkey breast, white fish, etc.
i have noticed all bodybuilders at the gym who are on a pre contest diet are doing roughly 80 percent protein the last weeks leading up to a contest, so it does work for getting shredded. none that i've spoken to use protein powders (one girl just competed a couple weeks ago).
