Holiday Weight Gain Greater For Already Obese/Overweight

I came across this article about "Holiday weight gain" that I think some on here might find interesting. It discusses a study that found that most people gain around 1 lb over the holidays (weighed mid-November to mid-January) despite believing they gained closer to 5. This discrepancy between perceived and actual gain is likely due to fluctuations in water-weight. Interestingly enough, the authors' posited that this extremely minor gain might actual be an important contributor to weight gain over time because people tend not to work it off, so it "rolls over" into later years. Even more intriguing, was their finding that the odds of gaining 5+ lbs over the Holidays are exponentially higher for overweight and obese subjects. Roughly 5% of normal-weight participants gained 5 or more lbs versus 11% of overweight patients, compared to a whopping 18% of obese subjects:

*Keep in mind, this study was done back in 2000, so the numbers may very well be far more concerning now.
