Calorie Management

Hello all. I hope this is the right place. I am new to the site and have been working on my fitness for a bit now but seem to have stagnated. I am trying to gain some lean muscle while slowly losing body fat/maintaining what I have. For reference here is my current spread.

33 years old...5'10''....160lbs... 34.5 inch waist...my calorie cap for myself is 3000 calories a day. I get 160 to 190g of protein a day....about 300g carbs on average
The fats I dont keep track much but try to eat healthy fats when I do.

My excercise is as follows. 5 out of 7 days I walk/ jog to work 3.7km in 30 to 40 mins. Then a brisk walk home of the same after work.

Two days of the week I do....(with 2 25lbs dumbells)
Overhead lift 10x3
Bent over row 15x3
Pushup 15x3
Standing flies 10x3
Hammer curl 10x3
Tric exten. 15x3
Wrist twost 15x3
Shrugs 15x3

The other two days are legs (same dumbells)
Goblet squat 15x3
Hip bridge 15x3
Stiff leg deadlift 15x3
Crunch 15x3
Leg lifts 10x3
Side bridge 10x3 each side
Russian twists 20x3
Plank 1 min.

I dont have access to a gym or heavier weights at this time. Also after a 9 hour shift throwing around 50+lbs boxes all day.

I dont seem to be gaining or losing weight but if I eat more I feel like its too much. I am not unfit by any means. I could lose a little stomach padding but for the most part my stomach is flat if not super defined.

4 Health Benefits of Spirulina—Plus, When You Should Avoid It

Spirulina, the blue-green algae you'll likely find in a powdered form that used to only be available in health food stores, is now proliferating supermarkets everywhere. Though it's been used as a food source for hundreds of years in cultures around the globe, it's only now becoming a health item du jour in the states. Here's what you need to know about spirulina, its health benefits, and how you can incorporate it into your diet.

History of Spirulina
Spirulina, or Arthrospira, is an algae that's been used across cultures for centuries. According to WebMD, the Aztecs used spirulina to treat various diseases, and perhaps used it as a supplement for the kingdom's messengers to sustain themselves on their marathon runs. Spirulina is used in much the same way today, and has even made its way to space as a dietary supplement for astronauts on NASA missions.

RELATED: The 30 Healthiest Foods to Eat Every Day

Now, it appears everyone wants to get their hands on this stuff. According to KBV Research, the global spirulina market is expected to reach $651 million by 2025. Spirulina can bloom and grow naturally in alkaline lakes around the world. However, companies are now also lab-growing this algae, which has an earthy, seaweed-like taste, in massive tubes to ensure there's enough supply for everyone.

Spirulina Nutrition Benefits
Emmie Satrazemis, RD, a board-certified sports nutritionist, registered dietitian, and nutrition director at Trifecta, believes spirulina deserves a spot in many a diet. As she points out, the naturally vegan food is packed with nutrients.

Related Items
1
It's loaded with protein and vitamins
According to Satrazemis, spirulina "is a fairly protein-dense and low-calorie" food. Plus, "it contains notable amounts of calcium, niacin, potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, and iron."

Satrazemis also notes that 1 tablespoon of spirulina contains just 25 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 1 gram of carbs, and 4 grams of protein.

2
It may reduce your risk of developing macular degeneration
"Spirulina is also a notable source of phytonutrients—plant-based compounds that are thought to provide protective health benefits," Satrazemis continues. More specifically, spirulina is rich in a certain group of phytonutrients called carotenoids.

Per a Harvard University study, carotenoids are beneficial for both eye health and immune health. A pair of the most common carotenoids—lutein and zeaxanthin—are found in the retina and may decrease your risk of developing macular degeneration by up to 43 percent.

3
It's packed with brain healthy omega-3 fatty acids
Josh Schlottman, a certified personal trainer and nutritionist, notes that spirulina is thought to be one of the best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, spirulina boasts both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in an approximately 1.5–1.0 ratio.

According to numerous studies, omega-3 fatty acids can help fight depression and anxiety, can ward off age-related mental decline and Alzheimer's disease, and promote brain health during pregnancy and early life.

Aside from giving your brain a boost, omega-3 fatty acids can also improve risk factors for heart disease, fight inflammation, and improve bone and joint health.

4
It fights cancer cells and inflammation
"There are also other nutrients present such as chlorophyll and beta-carotene which have been proven to fight cancer cells and protect vision from aging," Schlottman adds. "There are many benefits to spirulina, including the fact that it can help fight inflammation, boost your immune system, improve your gut health, and regulate blood sugar levels."

Should People Add More Spirulina to Their Diets?
Schlottman points out that there are countless benefits to adding spirulina to your daily diet. "Some of the most notable and important benefits include antioxidant protection, improved vision health, increased energy levels, low blood sugar regulation, and immune system strengthening/boosting," he explains. "Spirulina is also a great source of protein for vegetarians and vegans."

And the list goes on. Spirulina could also play a significant role in staving off malnutrition. According to a 2016 study published in Maternal and Pediatric Nutrition, malnourished children who received spirulina saw significantly more improvement in weight and height gain than children who only received regular supplements.

To get all these potential benefits, Satrazemis suggests the easiest route: "Add a scoop of spirulina to your morning smoothie or in other recipes for a small boost."

Reasons to Avoid Spirulina
There are some people who should avoid spirulina. According to Schlottman, "Those with anemia or low blood levels may want to stay away from it because of its high iron content. It can also cause nausea in those without a healthy stomach. People on certain medications might need to avoid spirulina as well, so be sure to talk with your doctor before adding spirulina to your daily diet."

Per Live Science, those with certain autoimmune conditions such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis may want to avoid spirulina, as it could worsen symptoms. Spirulina may also weaken the effect of immunosuppressants. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should also avoid spirulina, as there is a lack of safety information regarding expectant and nursing moms ingesting it.

4 Foods You Must Avoid to Lose Weight in 2022

The new year is upon us, which means many of us have set some resolutions and health-related goals for ourselves. If one of your goals is to lose some weight in 2022, you'll need some tools for setting yourself up for success.

Losing weight in a healthy way looks different for every individual, but it oftentimes requires some daily changes related to movement and diet. And while there's no one food that can make you gain or lose weight, there are certain foods that can have harmful effects on your goals.

Continue reading to learn about the foods that should be avoided or limited in 2022 in order to lose weight. And for more healthy weight loss tips, make sure to check out The Best Essential Foods to Eat to Lose Weight.

1 White bread
White bread is a processed carbohydrate that can quickly derail your health goals of losing weight.

"White bread doesn't help you stay full, so you might end up eating more calories than you need at your meal and gain weight over time," says Jinan Banna, PhD, RD, "especially because white bread has been stripped of the fiber you need to give you that sense of fullness. Because of this, it is better to choose whole-grain items to prevent weight gain in 2022."

2 Fried food
Your consumption of foods that are fried in oil should also be limited as much as possible. "Fried foods are generally high in calories, and if you consume more calories than you burn, this promotes weight gain," says Dr. Banna.

In one study, it was found that consumption of fried food was associated with a higher risk of gaining weight or developing obesity. And another study from the British Medical Journal found that it was crucial for those who might be genetically predisposed to limit their consumption of fried foods.

3 Sugar substitutes
According to registered dietitian Janet Coleman, RD with The Consumer Mag, sugar substitutes can be troubling when you're trying to shed some pounds, even though they're technically calorie-free.

"It's important to recognize that even though these substitutes have zero calories, they still cause an increase in blood glucose levels which can affect your ability to lose weight," says Coleman, "and research has shown that sugar substitutes can actually encourage weight gain due to their effect on insulin sensitivity."

RELATED: 'Healthy' Foods That Are Actually Dangerous, According to Dietitians

4 Low-fiber foods
"You should avoid foods that are low in fiber—like white bread, rice cakes, potato crisps, and other non-whole grain-based items—as they can contribute to weight gain in several ways," says registered dietitian Kara Landau, RD, gut health expert and founder at Uplift Food, "for example, soluble fiber slows gastric emptying, which keeps you feeling fuller for longer so you are less likely to overeat at your next meal.

Landau also notes a lesser-known type of fiber that is still crucial for weight loss, called resistant starch. "This type of fiber resists digestion as it travels along your gut, and upon reaching your large intestine, is fermented by the beneficial bacteria living there. This fermentation process releases byproducts which improve the body's insulin response, ultimately reducing fat stored around the waistline."

Not Losing Weight, Female

I am 34 years old and weigh 145 pounds. I exercise about 5 times a week doing weights for 20-30 min and at least 3 days I run 2 miles after. For the past month I’ve been tracking all my food. My calories I’m targeting is 1610 and broken up as 150 protein, 140 carbs, and 50 fat. I eat good most days but for example on Christmas had a slice of pumpkin pie but still put in MyFitnessPal and didn’t go over calories for the day.

I am unsure why I am not losing weight. My Fitbit says I burn 2300-2700 calories a day. I don’t want to drop my calories too much further since it wouldn’t be sustainable.

Should I up the protein and cut more fat? I feel the protein is pretty high though at 150.

Cravings for Fruits & Vegetables

I had far less fruits & vegetables than normal over the course of the last 4 days due to a busy work schedule that involved travel, & today I've been nearly crying tears of joy at how much I love every meal. I want nothing but fruits, salads, salmon, & other micronutrient dense foods. I honestly loved all the other foods I ate over the course of the last few days, but DAMN was I missing my regular foods. I've noticed this happen a number of times at this point and was wondering how common it is. It seems like a good corrective mechanism against overeating processed foods, but then again...so many people continually over-consume processed foods. The reverse never happens either. I don't eat large amounts of fruits or vegetables and then suddenly get the urge to eat nothing but cinnamon rolls and cookies for days (delicious tho they are). Then again, I include these things in small amounts in my regular diet and some people seem to love having their "cheat days", but I think there may be genetic differences coming into play since I've always liked these foods even when my diet was 99% processed chit. Can anyone relate?

Doctor keeps telling me protein intake doesn't matter?

I've always struggled with the gym, no matter what I do I just don't grow. It's horrible to say the least. I'm almost 100% sure it's the diet / minimal protein. I was always kind of brainwashed by doctors saying oh "you shouldn't worry that you're so weak, just lift correctly and you don't need all this protein".

I know when I was very young I didn't have much money, my protein intake was very minimal maybe 30 - 50 grams a day.

I weigh 240 pounds at 6 ft, which is fat. For me to lose weight, it's somewhere around 1,700~ calories a day.

The problem with me, chicken is so bland and tastes like cardboard. How do you guys force in so much protein? People are telling me if I weigh 240 pounds I should be aiming for at least 200 grams of protein a day.

I struggle to even hit 100 grams a day.

How do I stay so fat? I used to eat fast food and other bad chit like that but now that I'm eating better now, I've cut that out.

Is it a matter of force feeding yourself?

Also, 200 grams of protein = 1,000 calories so when it comes to the remaining 700 calories~ does it matter where those 700 come from? If I just want to do pure soda to hit the remaining daily calories which I know is bad, but does the quality of food matter?

You can take it with you and stir it up at your job; being playing the piano at a bordello, mopping the floors at the adult theater, or a bathroom attendant at a gentleman's club.

Nutrition for Hashimoto's

For the past year, I have had elevated serum thyroid antibodies. Historically (2+ years ago) I never tested by antibody levels, and my T3/4 and Free T3/4 were always fine, as was my TSH. I say that because it's possible my antibodies have always been elevated, I just didn't know it/didn't show any effect on my thyroid hormone levels.

Fast-forward to the beginning of last year, and I have elevated antibodies, and borderline low T3/Free T3.... and I'm trying to figure out ways to mitigate the risk of long term damage.

After doing some research, I recognize many things from my past likely contributed to this:

- History of restrictive eating/anorexia
- Family history (mom's side... she also had Hashimoto's AFTER also having Grave's disease when she was younger)... she now takes exogenous therapy for it
- General stress/anxiety

Also, after doing some digging, I believe I am in a somewhat earlier stage of the disease as my T3/T4 isn't completely tanked... but it's definitely not optimal; my TSH is still normal.

Apparently, as Hashimoto's is an auto-immune disease, there are potential interactions with common allergens in effected people, and going on an elimination phase might help get levels down.

Some of the suggestions I have heard, in order of their likely interactions include

1. Gluten
2. Dairy
3. Soy
4. Nightshades
5. FODMAPS

Basically... tasty stuff.

I'm just curious if anyone here has also had Hashimoto's, and if reducing or removing any of the above items had any effect.

I'm REALLY not keen on doing any kind of restriction given my history with eating disorders, but I also want to reduce my antibodies if I can...

Thanks.

Those who use a nutribullet - are you seeing more volume after making a smoothie?

Hi

I use a Nutribullet to make protein smoothies. After the blending is done, there is more volume in the cup then before I started. Anyone else notice this? Why is this? Is it whipping air into the liquid?

Thanks.

My pre, post and intra workout meals - Am I doing it right-ish?

Hi,

I'm sorry if this is a boring or repetitive question but I've been trying for a while to read up on what's required before, during and after a workout but there's so much conflicting information that I'm not sure if I'm doing it right or not so I just wanted to ask here to see if I'm missing something. I'm not trying to be a professional bodybuilder but I do want to get a good balance of nutrients if possible for health reasons as well as to gain muscle and lose fat so here's my general nutrition routine.

I wash down a couple of Beta Alanine tablets with pre workout powder, creatine and water before a workout and BCAA powder with water during the workout.

I drink smoothies to supplement my workouts which consist of 2 scoops huel powder to 1 scoop protein powder with frozen strawberries, a splash of extra virgin olive oil, super greens powder (Spirulina, kale, wheatgrass etc) and water.

Aboout an hour before a workout I'll have some oats with water and half of a smoothie to wash it down with the intention that this will be a fairly good combination to fuel my workout.

I'll take a smoothie to the gym with me which I'll usually drink half of half way through the workout and half straight after. I find that the half smoothie during the workout fuels the second half of my workout quite well as I tend to struggle towards the end if I skip it.

When I get home I'll generally air fry some chicken or have a rice and fish / meat / egg meal and wash it down with a fruit drink mix of coconut water and whatever other fruit juice I have in the fridge. I'll often have a Greek yoghurt before and after a workout as well, partly because they're nice and partly because I'm still not sure whether they're better before or after a workout.

So, I was just hoping for any feedback or ideas on what I could tweak to improve my nutrient intake around workouts. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks
