Another help ya boi with macros thread

I used to have a hell of a time trying to gain weight. Eventually I sorta just bombed my metabolism, stopped physical activity as my wife gave birth to my son and continued consuming maltodextrin which transitioned into eating anything I wanted. This is all kind of happening simultaneously, and I technically became a fat ass (100lbs within a year).

Fast forward 4.5 years, I'm currently 256lbs and about 6'3 (started at 155lbs). I have a nice gut and titties that unfortunately gotta go. I hit 30 and owe it to myself and family to get into great shape before I lose all my testosterone (I never got fit), and in general be healthy and hopefully live a while longer.

Ironically, I've always read and been into health and fitness, but never applied it due to the "start tomorrow" mentality. Now that I've been exercising and lifting, I've realized that one thing I never learned was how to calculate macros. I'd rather not do more harm than good as I experiment, so my question to you chumps is, what is the ideal baseline for my goals? I figured I can set a target weight of something like 215lbs, I guess I'm not too concerned with rapid weight loss as much as I'm concerned about becoming active and regaining muscular control of my body, so I just want to ensure that my macros support my gains.

Please help ya boi

4000 calories a day and no weight gain

i have a friend who is struggling with that issue, he is small guy just 5'6" and really skinny at about 130 lbs
he sedentary except when he works-out
so naturally the best advice for him is to eat a lot more calories than what he burns
he tried to up his calories first by 500 calories above maintenance then 1000 then 2000 above his maintenance which was 2000 so now hes is eating 4000 calories a day
still no weight gain !!
but he gained a lot of strength and endurance
i thought maybe its malabsorption or maybe he is over estimating how much he its but no! its neither
so what do you think about that ? where is the problem ?

"Tangy" is a superfluous and vague adjective for food.

"Tangy"

adjective: tangy; comparative adjective: tangier; superlative adjective: tangiest

having a strong, piquant flavor or smell.

"a tangy salad"

TBH, I don't think that definition (from Google) is accurate to how most people use the word...

I had to look up "piquent", and it just means sharp & pleasant flavor...

Yet again, not how I use the term at all.

Personally, I see 'TANGY' as a short-hand way of describing something that is some combination of strongly sour & sweet at the same time without reaching the threshold of unpleasant/over-powering.

So basically, 'tangy', to me, just means pleasantly sweet & sour at the same time...

Google is wrong, and I am right.

What say you all?

More food + Less cardio = Going down in weight? Can someone help

Hi Everyone,

So I'm here looking for some perspective on what's currently happening to my body right now, as I'm entering new territory (looking to build muscle) for the first time in a long time despite being a very active individual. Ever since my pec tear, I have been taking time to focus on other aspects of my weight training. Its been a few years now where I have over-emphasized cardio, high volume training and mobility / other avenues of fitness and I am a little unsure of what is happening to my body right now.

Up until 2 weeks ago, I have been eating around 2800-3000 calories a day and doing about 300 minutes of cardiovascular/LISS a day. Here I was actually maintaining my weight around the high 190s/200.

Now that I'm looking to build muscle, I'm increasing my calories and reducing my cardio activity and reducing my volume in workouts to prioritize strength and progressive overload. What I don't understand is why my weight is dropping now? It's nothing rapid, but my weigh ins are on a downward trend. I feel strong AF compared to before, but I just want to understand whats happening here.

Does anyone have any insights they can provide me with to understand this?

Snack Recommendation: Apple Cinnamon Almond Butter Yogurt Bowl w/Cereal

I am certainly a creature of habit.

Somewhere between 4pm and 4:30pm is a 'snack time' for me.

Part of this snack always includes yogurt topped with cereal or granola of some kind (and also a protein bar on the side)

Today, though, I tried doing it a bit different... for the yogurt/cereal portion, I did the following:

1. Greek Yogurt Base (I used something like 1 1/2 cups of ***e yogurt)
2. Drizzle on about 2 tbsp of Raw Almond Butter
3. Topped with 1 Whole Food Organic Apple Sauce cup
4. Sprinkle on Cinnamon
5. Top with Cereal (I used Honey Nut Cheerios... but I imagine anything honey/cinnamon/vanilla etc would be awesome)

I never thought the combination of Yogurt, apple sauce, almond butter, and cereal would be that good. But mind=blown.

Next time im using golden grahams to see if it hits the apple pie note.

Highly recommend.

New evidence on energy compensation

https://www.sciencedirect.com/scienc...60982221011209

«We used the largest dataset compiled on adult TEE and basal energy expenditure (BEE) (n = 1,754) of people living normal lives to find that energy compensation by a typical human averages 28% due to reduced BEE; this suggests that only 72% of the extra calories we burn from additional activity translates into extra calories burned that day.»

«Overall, energy compensation was not different in men versus women and did not vary with age (i.e., BEE × sex and BEE × age interactions; Table S1B). Hence, energy compensation seems to be a general phenomenon that applies equally to men and women, young and old.»

«[...] controlling for sex, age, and FFM, compensation increases with FM. People that are at the 10th percentile of the BMI distribution compensate 27.7% of activity calories, whereas people at the 90th percentile compensate 49.2% of activity calories (Figure 3).»

«Public health strategies for fat loss should be revised to recognize energy compensation as our understanding progresses about which individuals compensate and by how much.»

Foods You Love A Little of But NOT A Lot

Are there any foods you really love in small quantities, but don't like eating large amounts of? For me:

Chocolate- I love choc. chip cookies, chocolate salted caramels, Oreos, S'mores, etc. I even love having a couple squares of quality dark chocolate, but I'll never eat a full chocolate bar of any kind. I also prefer non-chocolate cakes (unless red velvet) and hate chocolate ice cream.

Cheese- Hard/semi-hard cheeses are absolutely incredible in moderation & I fuking love pizza, but I can't stomach too much cheese or I'm very quickly nauseated. I think this is a combo of being turned off by too much of the flavor and what it does to my stomach.

Egg Yolks- I really enjoy a single egg yolk (not runny tho), but any much more than that & the same thing that I said about cheese applies here.

Cinnabon- The first few bites of a fresh Cinnabon or other epic cinnamon roll are orgasmic. Finishing one, or God forbid 2, is a very specific type of Hell.

Will increasing daily Pee Pee increase TDEE?

Been mowing lawns all afternoon in 96 degree heat. I'd have a bottle of water every 15 minutes. I do a lot of thinking when I'm on a riding mower. So my question is this, if you drink plenty of zero calorie beverage all day will it increase your TDEE because it takes energy to excrete the water from your system?

from Bodybuilding.com Forums - Nutrition https://ift.tt/3yrHWTN

What do you feel are the biggest unknowns in nutrition/weight management?

I'll start as I follow a lot of the literature, in no particular order:

1. The impact of food processing on the food matrix and nutrient quality. There is some research on this but it's quite scattered and difficult to find a comprehensive overview other than it's generally better to minimize heat/time cooking/light exposure to avoid undesirable oxidation.
2. The benefits vs harms of organic (or more specifically exogenous pesticide-free) food long term. Thus far there are only significant harms seen with organophosphate consumption in pregnant women and young children, but with environmental changes over time it's unclear how this will continue to evolve.
3. The impact of exercise on TDEE (had to include this to fit in with the forum). More seriously, is there an optimal PAL (TDEE/REE) to help stave off some of the compensatory increases in hunger that occur with weight loss? This review proposes 1.7-1.8, but the authors acknowledge we need a lot more evidence. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6835968/
4. Being in ketosis seems to suppress hunger and ghrelin; are there any other dietary or exercise modifications that can consistently alter gut hormone secretion to aid hunger/satiety?
5. There is still a lot of controversy about the different types of saturated fat as well as sodium intake. Same with egg intake. Same with dairy regarding prostate cancer risk. Same with processed meat and unprocessed red meat.
6. There are still outstanding questions regarding protein intake (amounts, timing, importance of leucine per meal, the long-term impact on these, etc).
7. The time-restricted eating literature (what most people here call intermittent fasting) shows lots of promise but studies are small, and there are only ~7 in people engaging in resistance training. These typically show that lean mass is preserved, and this literature overall shows promise. Whether this translates to larger studies and longer-term remains to be seen.
8. What makes constitutionally thin people different? The literature is sparse overall but these individuals (generally defined as BMI <18.5 with no medical issues (other than decreased bone mass) who struggle to gain weight) may hold the key to treating the obesity epidemic.

Curious if others have thoughts.

TDEE = BMR + NEAT + TEF - EAT (Yes, MINUS EAT)

When I stopped exercising, my TDEE went up at least 2000 calories per day.

I suspect this is because I was no longer compensating for the exercise by down-regulating other contributing factors.

Most notably, I noticed that I had way more food in my gut (I was full of shyt).

This will only work if you're full of shyt... but it's a reliable method for weight loss.

Trust me.

Newer Sweeteners: Following in the Steps of Stevia in Terms of Safety?

The search for guilt-free sweetness that spares waistlines and safe sweetness for diabetics has led to the rise of “natural” sweeteners: extracts from particular plants whose sweetness does not derive from sugar, and cannot be metabolized by the body. You might have heard of stevia, and now there is also the up-and-coming monk fruit sweetener, derived from mogrosides in monk fruit, also called swingle fruit or luo han guo. However, what is marketed as “natural” does not necessarily equal “healthy” for consumers, nor is “natural” necessarily environmentally-friendly in production.

Concerns over sweetener safety has led to global legislation. The FDA has not approved the use of raw stevia, and stevia originally was banned in the U.S. in 1991 due to studies that suggested the sweetener may cause cancer, and though the ban has since been lifted, actions by other countries show that safety is not guaranteed. The European Union continues to ban sale of the plant as a food or food ingredient because of safety concerns. Although newer sweeteners such as monk fruit sweetner have not been officially banned, it is of note that the AHA recommends that children and adolescents should limit their intake of artificial sweeteners, including so-called natural sweeteners like monk fruit sweetener, due to the inconclusive evidence on their effects. In particular, children under the age of two should not eat or drink anything with such sweeteners. CSPI recommends caution because the monk fruit sweetener has been poorly tested in animals.

What may seem natural in origin may acquire carcinogenic properties due to comtamination in production processes. Mogrosides from monk fruit are processed and extracted with methyl alcohol or other toxic chemicals, and traces of these chemicals may remain in the final products, particularly when production plants are poorly equipped and underregulated. Furthermore, such extraction factories may substantially mar their environment and the health of local populations. One of the major monk fruit sweetener producers, Ji Fu Si, a poorly equipped enterprise based in Guilin, China, is the nexus of air, river water, and groundwater polution in its county, with a significant number of cancer cases among farmers living nearby in the polluted environment. With such enterprises lacking the updated technology to control their environmental impact, it raises questions as to how safe and pure their extractions actually are.

A Danish study done involving 59,334 pregnant women found that the intake of artificially sweetened beverage was associated with an increased risk of preterm delivery, so use of artificial sweeteners including stevia and monk fruit should be done with caution for high-risk individuals such as pregnant and lactating women, diabetics, migraine and epilepsy patients, and children. Many of sweeteners' purported beneficial effects remain invalidated in large scale clinical studies.

Changing your diet choosing nutrient-rich foods

You should choose a diet made of nutrient-rich foods. Nutrient-rich (or nutrient-dense) foods are low in sugar, sodium, starches, and bad fats. They contain a lot of vitamins and minerals and few calories. Your body needs vitamins and minerals, known as micronutrients. They nourish your body and help keep you healthy. They can reduce your risk for chronic diseases. Getting them through food ensures your body can absorb them properly.

Try to eat a variety of foods to get different vitamins and minerals. Foods that naturally are nutrient-rich include fruits and vegetables. Lean meats, fish, whole grains, dairy, legumes, nuts, and seeds also are high in nutrients.
