Docs asked to suggest alternatives to pholcodine-containing cough syrups

The drug regulator has warned doctors to stop prescribing cough syrups containing suppressant pholcodine and suggest alternative medicines instead. The regulator's advisory comes after concerns that people taking pholcodine-containing medicine may suffer from life-threatening allergic reactions during general anaesthesia before surgery.
