Is reverse dieting hogwash?

Been reading and hearing that reverse dieting is a myth because it only prolongs your deficit and that if you go from cutting to your -new- maintenance, you won't gain fat. Instead that rapid weight gain is due to water retention, glycogen, and food in GI tract...easy +10lbs in 2 weeks or so straight from a rapid cut.

Thoughts? Experiences?

should you eat during the night (IF you wake up)

if you happen to wake up in the night (which I often do) should you try and consume some protein?

you have several windows in the day to achieve protein synthesis - maybe 5 or so? so the question is if u happen to wake up in the night should u nip to the fridge a grab a chicken wing or a quick protein shake. get some 30 grams of protein into system before u go back to sleep.
before someone tries to 'strawman' me... i'm not saying u would set an alarm to intentionally wake yourself up... just if you happen to wake up.

For some references, I'm 6'0, 180-185 lbs, ~14.25 inch arms. I want to really pack on some lean mass, but am also getting grossed out seeing myself getting softer and softer.

Have you avoided spinning your wheels over your "dieting" career?

I've been in this thing since 2012 as far as dieting. I'm usually able to stomach a "serious diet" once every 18 months where the diet lasts at least 6 months and go through a very solid transformation. I've never been a fat phuck or athletic freak but somewhere in the average middle. Usually every cut I am able to push my self a little further and improve my results from the previous.

One thing I could never shake though, no matter what cutting method I employ is that after every diet there seems to be a hunger debt. Every cut I believe I feel the instincts calling in like some outwardly world hunger drive at a point. I remember one time I was so hungry the images of cadaver videos made me salivate in anatomy classes. Anyways it seems to come about no matter the caloric deficit, diet breaks, IIFYM, carbs cycling etc etc whether it aggressive or conservative and seems to be more related to overall fat loss, and I'm not talking I'm going below 10% BF... I'm talking sub 15% is when it kicks in

One thing I will admit to not have trying is doing a super conservative cut, lets say 100-200 calorie deficit per day and I was wondering if anyone has faced the same issues as me and what helped. Overall I feel like this hunger drive has keep me from maintaining over meaningful periods of times. I will say you learn how to push your discipline further however it seems like there's an underlying issue in my case. I think there is something I can do differently to avoid feeling like I'm starving on an instinctual level and maintain a healthy 15% BF for years on end

Sport Nutritionist or Keep Guessing

Guys/Gals,

I’m not really sure what I need to be doing to achieve my goals at this point. I started my journey at 265lbs around 27-30%BF and just did an INBODY examination today and landed at 227lbs and 17%BF. 8 weeks ago I was 235lbs and 16%BF. Basically the INBODY told me I lost 9lbs of muscle and gained 1.5lbs of fat. I’ve been in the gym 6 days a week and stayed in a calorie deficit (-200-500 cal/day) since January.

I’m at a crossroads with these new results. I can either ignore them and keep chugging this train along down to my 215lb goal weight or take some means of precaution and use these results to share with a professional nutritionist to understand what I’ve done wrong for my body to begin consuming muscle instead of fat.

Right now I’m planning on sticking to my plan and writing the results off as a misread or bad day to take it and if the results come back with less muscle and similar fat on the next examination to be worried and take professional measures.

What do you guys think? I’m feeling decent for the most part other than aches and pain from general lifting. I’ve gotten used to the deficit so losing weight at a slow and steady pace has become fairly easy. Just want to be sure I’m losing the right weight.

Thanks in advance!

Does baking cheese thoroughly affect its nutritional content?

This might be a more or less silly question, as it sounds like I'm asking if a pan of gooey nachos is somehow better than any other delicious and regular form of cheese, but yesterday I ran into something a little different which has me curious.

For dinner, I grated cheese over an item I was already going to bake anyway. I added actually quite a bit, and accidentally baked it too long so that the cheese ended up being crispy and relatively dry all across the top. It was still scrumptious, but it made me wonder if any of the nutritional fat is reduced by this method, whether by leaking out or something else to do with baking it in particular.

So if I wanted to bake cheese directly into wafers and eat that as a snack, is that calorically any different than eating it cold or warmly melted?

Thanks!

Calorie Cycling for Cut

Hi all,

I've been trying calorie cycling and was looking for some perspectives on the plan I’ve been following based on some advice I received. Currently, I'm hitting food heavier on weekends with heavy lifting days and then low calorie meals during the weekdays.

Goal is to lose around 1.5 - 2lbs per week and get back to around 12-15% bodyfat. Definitely more of a lifestyle trainee but love getting back in shape and have been enjoying it since restarting a month and a half ago.

My stats
- 6’1
- 234
- 27% bf
- 2100 time (lab measured)
- 2300 bmr (Dexa sedentary)
- 2800 bmr (dexa slightly active)

Workout
- Lift 45 minutes 4 times a week high intensity walk for about an hour 4-5 times a week at slow dog walking pace

Diet
- Eating around 14000 calories a week which averages 2k a day.
- Eating 2800-3200 per day on Sat and Sun with heavy lifting.
- Non weekend says are 1500-2000 depending on lifting day or not (Mon - Wed - Fri 1500, Tues / Thurs when working out 2000)
- Eating high protein to help minimize muscle lost across the board.

What’s your take on plans of this nature? Again, looking for a more balanced approach that enables me to enjoy weekends and flexibility in diet. Targeting around 1.5 - 2lbs of loss a week to get back to 12-15% bodyfat.

Thanks all

Low Blood Sugar Issue?

Hello everyone,

First time posting on these forums — be gentle.

This morning I did my usual HIIT cardio workout but on an empty stomach, before breakfast; something I don't always do. I noticed post-workout shower time that I was feeling as if I couldn't quite catch my breath. After my shower, I made my breakfast (I follow an IF plan every single day of 16-18 hours) and began feeling a little light-headed, dizzy, faint, and still quite breathless. As I sat down to eat I felt very weak and had to force-feed myself. It took me some time but I began to feel like I was recovering. My first inkling was: low blood sugar. Does this sound like it to you?

It may sound like a stupid thing to do (HIIT cardio on an empty stomach — especially when following IF and a low-carb diet) but I have done it multiple times before and been OK. Suffice to say, I did feel similarly the last time I did this, I do remember but it wasn't as bad.

If anyone could clarify if this was a low blood sugar level issue and explain why this is a bad idea for my knowledge I'd highly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.
