The energy cost of muscle-protein synthesis
The current/active thread related to 'main-gaining' sparked in me a familiar - but somewhat unique - course of thought which im not entirely sure has been discussed here before, so I'm curious what people have to say about it.
When we discuss a calorie surplus in the interest of gaining weight for 'bulking' of any kind, typically we are referring to a rate of fat gain; 3500 calories of excess energy results in ~1lb of fat gain, the standard goes.
So for example, if someone goes on a 250 calories / day surplus, they gain roughly .5lb of fat in a week, or about 26lb in a year, etc.
Now what got me scratching my head is related to someone's capacity for muscle gain specifically, and how that contributes to the net total weight gain over a period of time... because if someone gains 26lb of fat in their first year of lifting while in a 250 calorie surplus... that's only the fat mass... what about the muscle?
It's been speculated that a newbie might even gain 20lb maximum of muscle tissue in there first year if they do everything right, are maybe taller, etc...
So if that's the case, would that 250 calorie a day surplus result in a 46lb weight gain in a year since it would be 26lb of fat and 20lb of muscle?
If so, then that person wouldn't even be able to track weight gain to that goal rate, because on the scale it would look like they were gaining almost at TWICE the desired rate...
Never thought about that before but, anyone have thoughts on that? I'm just curious if, especially when rapid lean tissue gain is expected, we ought to be more generous with the rate of gain because perhaps a 250 calorie a day surplus might result in something like gaining .8-1lb a week with something like 40% of that being muscle... as opposed to seeing that weight gain and assuming it's 'too fast'.

My doc says I need to be on medication to lower my cholesterol but I want to diet first. Basically no eggs and more fiber and fish oil.
I track all my macros and lift heavy x 3 a week with 40 min of cardio on off days.
I came across some research that says cholesterol is a precursor to testosterone, which when I lift, increases in order to build muscle. But this is only for the "good" cholesterol?
Is it different for me because I have familial hypercholesterolemia?

Most people should do maingaining/lean bulk phases, and only cut if obese?
Alright this may spark some controversy, but hear me out first. I'll use males as an example. I think they should alternate between maingaining and lean bulking phases depending on a bodyfat range of 12-20%. With maingaining, you eat at maintenance calories and with a 'lean' bulk, you eat at a 100-200 calorie surplus. If 12% bodyfat, lean bulk. Once 20% is reached, maingain to 12%. If over 20%, cut. At around 12% bodyfat, it becomes way too slow to keep maingaining, so lean bulking would be the way to go again. Also, both 12% bodyfat and 20% body fat are healthy levels without performance being impacted. You can also monitor performance in the gym to see if maingaining is working. If you're progressing, you're building muscle. The main point of this post is to constantly be in an anabolic state.
From what I'm seeing, we have an epidemic of cutting and wanting to be lean and not enough muscle building. Many people want to get lean to the point that they don't have much to show once lean. I'm against cutting the majority of the time because it slows the rate of muscle growth considerably and pretty much stops it for those who have already built up a decent amount of muscle mass. Also, most people do it wrong and end up losing muscle mass which they then have to regain once they start bulking. So how much time did they really save for building muscle? They end up yoyoing an entire year's worth of progress that they could of made.
Maingaining on the other hand, is only about 100-200 calories shy of a slow bulk so it doesn't impact the rate of muscle growth anywhere near as much as cutting does. Now I know that maingaining while lean is a pipe dream, but doing it once reaching about 20% bodyfat from a slow bulking phase is perfectly feasible. You never have to worry about halting muscle growth with cutting phases. You could be gaining 3lbs of muscle in 3 months maingaining instead of nothing at all. You are not only burning up bodyfat stores to build muscle, but you are also bringing your bodyfat percentage down through having more lean tissue built.

Can I reach my goal by summer?
So I'm 16years old 63kg(~139lbs) I've recently had a change in my diet adding some calories and protein (about 2700-3000 calories daily and about ~90g of protein) I work out 7 times per week 2x legs 2xarms 2xchest and 1x back and I also do muay thai 4-5 times per week and my goal is to reach atleast 70kg (154lbs) by summer. Oh and I've so far been working out for 8 months and gained about 5kg(11lbs) but that was with my previous diet. What do y'all think

How can i reach my macros
Hey guys I recently got a personal trainer and the macros he gave me seem pretty high. I've tried to meet them but I ran out of ideas and stomach to reach it lol. I'm 6'2 26 and 280lbs. I am overweight and my goal is to gain muscle than shred later. He also told me I need to work harder so I can eat that much.
My macros for day 1 is Calories - 2660, Fat - 52g, Carbs - 205g, Protein - 351g
Day 2 Calories - 2882, Fat 63g, Carbs - 210g, Protein - 344g
So my week will be likes Mon- Day 1, Tues - Day 2, Wed - Day 1 etc.
Any ideas? I just don't see how I can actually reach that much protein. I'm not on any special diets or vegan. I am trying to make sure I get enough veggies in my diet. Please don't recommend cottage cheese. :p.

Have you ever had a nutritional food crisis?
Was digging through my freezer yesterday and found some frozen cooked shrimp that expired in 2020. Thawed them out and cooked some bacon to accompany them. The horrible taste of the shrimp even made the bacon taste bad. I went with Plan B, Pizza Hut.
Today was digging through my freezer and found a package of pre-made hamburger patties. They expired 6/19. Cooked them on my grill. They had the consistency of burnt toast and the taste of cardboard. I went with Plan B, cooked some bacon and eggs.

Gaining strength and weight, but not muscle?
Hey guys. My current situation is. I started lifting in October 2020 -Weighed around 165ish- then I bulked until March 2021 - weighed around 186. My arms were roughly 13 inches and chest was around 37.5. Max bench got to 225. After march I cut for 3 months and got down to 165. then in June 2021 I started doing bulking again with a more serious approach at lifting. I learned all the fundamentals and nutrition. Fast forward to now -sep 2021-
I am currently at 187 -worked on 20 lbs-. Arms are still roughly 13 in and my chest is the same too. The only thing that has grown since June 2021 are my shoulders. They got an inch.
I estimate my BMR with my daily activities to be around 3000 and I am currently eating 3700 cal and 220g of protein a day. I am running jeff nippards lifting fundamentals program with extra core work. It is an upper-lower that trains 4 times a week and seems to almost all of the muscle groups 2x a week.
My Max bench in March was 225 and now it is 255. I am 24 and 5'11. I have saw some strength gains, but I just feel like I haven't gained any muscle. Am I doing something wrong here? Why are my chest and arms still the same? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Doing weights with the required protein intake but calorie deficit
Hi all,
For some years I've been doing cardio in the gym. However for around 3months I started doing weights 3 times per week to supplement my cardio. The routine I did was only 3x8 dumbbells' curls, that's all. I started at 10kg now I'm at 18kg. I haven't altered my diet during this period. However, I have noticed my muscles have grown. Now I want to do a proper routine (mark rippertoes starting strength to be precise). I'm ok to buy protein shakes and the rest get from my meals. But the calories I cant do because access to cooking facilities is limited (the kitchen area). My question is what would happen if I ate enough calories per day but had a calories deficit?

What's your definition of Detroit Style Pizza? Mine is any frozen pizza that you shoplift from a grocery store under your clothing. I did something like that back in '86. I got access to a frozen institutional cheesecake in a cardboard box that looked like a pizza box. I smuggled it out of the facility under my Levi denim jacket. It took me, my roommate and several neighbors in the dorms a few days to eat it.

Keto/Low carb feeling weak asf and getting me down a bit.
Hey everyone I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes it runs in the family :/ and have been put on a low carb diet and its working to control my diabetes however my gym life is suffering big time... i know its not the end of the world but as someone thats enjoyed lifting for the last 5/6 years and pushing my limits its very disheartening to see not only my size but my lifts suffering and feeling weak all the time.
I have maintained the same amount of calories as I normally would but with the macro's now leaning highly towards protein/fat but despite the same calories I just cant lift for crap nowadays and feel tired within 45 mins.
Has anyone else switched to this diet and how have you managed to get round this ? also not sure if its muscle loss or just with the low carb muscle flatness... but I'm looking like some lean swimmer nowadays rather than big and burly which is not a look I wish to have any tips ?
Forgot to mention I also keep getting mini flu's after trying to push it hard... esp leg days something I never had issues with before... possibly the lack of carbs for recovery ?

Should I be concerned about this? I've noticed that my lifts have stalled fairly early on too. I eat plenty of protein (and fats), ensure 8+ hours of sleep every night, and have cut out most of the stress in my life.

Nutrition Review
I've started training again in June after the lockdown as I gained some weight, I had about 6 month training experience prior. I meal prep every three days, thus I eat the exact same amount of food over three days. I am 190cm, 18 y/o, and currently 92.5 kg (from about 96 YAY).
As to what I eat:
Lowfat Quark(Magerquark in German):
500g Lowfat Quark
4.5g Chunky Flavor (used so it doesnt taste like sh*t)
Fajita Bowl:
100g uncooked rice
150g Beef (mixed of lowfat and normal as I use 900g in three days, 400g lowfat and 500g normal)
150g Salsa
Mozzarella Light:
125g Mozzarella Light
Balsamico Creme
Chili con Carne:
150g Beef
2/3 Can of kidneybeans
1/3kg sieved tomatos
1/3kg Broccoli
~Total Kcal:1800kcal /150g Carbs / 185g Protein/ 45g Fat
btw I am doing a push pull rest legs rest split thus go 4-5 times a week in the gym.
I just wanted to asked for some overall tips for my nutrition.
